Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Kampovsky.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Although I had been drawing and interested in art my whole life, I was always resistant to taking any structured art classes or exploring my talents. There are several talented female artists in my family, and they eventually urged me into my first art class when I was about 17. I dove right into detailed charcoal and graphite portraits and quickly realized that I had a gift all along. As I’m growing, I’m learning to take my talent and maximize my potential, while exploring my abilities to express myself through art.
Please tell us about your art.
When I create a piece of art, my ultimate goal is for the end product to represent something I can see in my mind. Art is a unique medium because it allows the artist to explain things differently than words ever could. I like to explore emotion in my work, especially since most of my paintings and drawings are portraits. My paintings are meant to be a mirror for the viewer; an experience that is different for everyone who sees it. People often ask me what my artwork “means,” and while I may have an explanation for the vision behind it, I want to leave the meaning for the viewer to create themselves. What does my work mean to YOU?
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I don’t think I’ve found success as an artist yet. The potential for my career is limitless, but I think success is when the work you are producing is at the level of quality and consistency that you want. I know artists can be self-critical of their work, so I don’t know if that’s even possible, but it’s certainly worth trying for. The happier I am when I’m painting, the more successful I consider myself.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
As I’m building my personal portfolio, I’m posting my work mainly on my Instagram @kathryn.kampovsky and can also be found on my website www.kampovskyart.com. I occasionally take private commissions but am primarily trying to streamline my style and body of work to get it ready to begin showing in galleries or for the public. If someone wants to support me, they can purchase a print via my website or by emailing me at rynkamp@yahoo.com.
