Meet Katie Bishop of Yalla Public Relations in Columbus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Bishop.

Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated in 2012 from the University of Alabama with a degree in Public Relations. After living in Atlanta for almost two years and finding myself let go from a start-up, I made my way back home to Columbus. Columbus was in the middle of a revitalization. The downtown was booming and the city had just taken down the Chattahoochee River dams to create a world-class whitewater park. I found myself working for the rafting company as their Marketing Director for two years. While working there, I met my Co-Founder Stephanie Woodham. Over the next three years, we built our business. I slowly transitioned from working at the Rafting company to waiting tables while building enough clientele to sustain myself full time.

Yalla was officially started in 2015 as a public relations company focusing on traditional public relations, social and digital marketing, and event production. We now represent many locally owned and operated businesses, including RushSouth Whitewater Park, and we help host over five events each year. We have four employees and are proud to be a fully women-owned and operated business. We currently do everything from video production to graphic design and social media management. Our passion for the work comes from the need to make our community a better place to live, work and play.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has always been bumpy. Building and owning your own business comes with a lot of learning opportunities. I have made many mistakes along the way, but I would never change the past. I am lucky to have a team around me to pick me up and help me stay focused on moving forward. The biggest struggle as of now if preparing a future in a complete unknown. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t afraid of what 2021 will bring. Our company survives off of the success of local businesses. With the current state of the economy, we are fearful of the future, but we will continue to stay focused on the success of our clients and hope when the new year comes, we will thrive.

Please tell us about Yalla Public Relations.
Our company is best known for its work in social and digital marketing. The majority of our clients have us take the wheel on all things social and digital marketing. This means creating the content and managing their platforms. I am proud of the personality and dedication we bring to our work. We work on projects we are truly passionate about, which means we are always having fun. We are known as high-energy go-getters, who always go over and beyond for our clients. I am so proud to be a part of a bad-ass woman-led team.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely NOT. I am only 30, and a lot of the time I am learning as I go, and I find this to be the best way to learn. My mistakes along the way have only taught me to be better.
