Meet Katie Landers of KL Expressive Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Landers.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Art has always been my gateway to healing and finding meaningful connection to others. When I discovered that I could help facilitate this process for others, there was no choice about what I would do with my life. I became a fully licensed therapist and credentialed Art Therapist and have had opportunities to work with many amazing people. I have worked in hospitals, in school programs and group practices. I have enjoyed connecting with people from so many different paths but have particularly enjoyed working with LGBTQ folks and helping with issues related to moods and sense of self. I started my own practice in 2022 and love working with my clients to help them understand themselves better and feel more in control over their lives. Traditional therapy isn’t right for everyone and I love being able to show folks an alternative!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel strongly about therapy being accessible and sustainable. I try to work with insurance as much as possible so my clients can care for themselves without struggling with the financial burden. However the ever changing landscape of healthcare makes it challenging for therapists and clients alike! Like most industries, mental health services were significantly impacted by COVID. In some ways it opened doors for people to prioritize their mental health in ways they haven’t before. It also changed how I connected with my clients, instead of sharing a space where we create and explore together we were doing that miles away over a screen. Adaptability in myself and the folks I worked with became more important than ever!

As you know, we’re big fans of KL Expressive Therapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a fully licensed therapist and credentialed art therapist. I specialize in working with clients who are struggling with issues related to moods or identity . I tend to work with clients who feel that traditional therapy is not the best fit for them or are looking to explore and express themselves in a more creative way.

My approach as a therapist is based around radical genuineness. By that, I mean empowering people to be their most authentic self and promote honest and clear communication. I want my clients to feel feel more in control of their own lives and relationships. I feel honored that every day I get to wake up heal others heal through expressive arts.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Art has always been a large part of our emotional language. People remember a particular painting or piece of music because of how it makes them feel. Using art to process, discover and connect has been a timeless process and I look forward to seeing what flavor it takes in the future. As technology advances I believe people will gravitate towards creating and connecting with others in a meaningful way.
