Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Mitchell.
Katie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to becoming a salon owner has been such a rewarding adventure. I actually thought I wanted to be a nurse at first. I went to college for a year before realizing my true passion had always been in beauty. I’ve loved all things hair and makeup since I was a little girl, so I decided to follow that dream and enroll in cosmetology school at West Georgia Tech.
After graduating, I spent time working in two different salons where I learned so much about both the art and the business side of the industry. Eventually, I found my long-term home at A & D Hair Designs, where I spent 11 years growing as a stylist and connecting with amazing clients. When the opportunity came to purchase the salon, it felt like the perfect next step… and that’s how Ruby Charles Salon was born!
It’s been an incredible experience turning something I’ve always loved into a space where others can feel beautiful and confident every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any business owner, there have definitely been challenges along the way. Owning a salon comes with a lot of responsibility. From managing schedules and staff to keeping up with trends and making sure every guest has a great experience. There were moments of doubt and learning curves, especially in the beginning, but each obstacle has made me stronger and more confident as a leader.
One thing that’s made all the difference is having my husband, David, as my business partner. He’s amazing at the administrative side of things, which allows me to focus on marketing and running the day-to-day operations of the salon. We make a great team, and I truly couldn’t do it without him.
Every challenge we’ve faced together has helped us grow — not just as business owners, but as people. I’m so grateful for how far we’ve come and for the incredible clients and team that make it all worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Ruby Charles Salon is all about helping people feel confident and beautiful in their own skin. We’re not just focused on great hair, we want every guest who walks in to feel comfortable, listened to, and cared for. I think what sets us apart is the vibe. It’s warm, welcoming, and laid-back…kind of like hanging out with friends who just happen to be really good at hair!
We specialize in effortless, everyday beauty. From fresh cuts to flawless color, our team loves creating soft lived in styles that enhance your features and fit your lifestyle.
I’m most proud of the genuine community we’ve built. Ruby Charles Salon isn’t just about great hair, it’s about connection, confidence, and creating a space that feels like home. That’s what I want people to know about our brand. When you visit us, you’re not just a client; you’re part of the Ruby Charles family.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have so many supportive people along the way. My husband David, family and friends are always there to support not only me but the salon!
I also have to mention Deena Almon, the longtime owner of A & D Hair Designs. I’ll never forget walking in as a brand-new stylist with just three clients and asking if they were hiring. She took a chance on me, and I’ll always be grateful for that. Deena ran an amazing workplace and taught me so much about the kind of culture I wanted to create when I eventually owned a salon myself.
