Hi Katlyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Blue Skies & Ko started on accident. I was a waitress at a small tavern in Roswell, GA and after working endless shifts, I needed to find a creative outlet. After working one of those endless shifts, I decided to make a stop at a local craft store on the way home from work. As I was browsing the store with nothing in mind, I came across a hand-stamping jewelry kit that really sparked my interest. It took me back to the days when I was just a little girl sitting with my sweet grandmother at the kitchen table creating jewelry. I knew it when I saw it and I had to get it.
After a few months of creating jewelry and keychains, I had friends and family start to ask if I could create them little personalized pieces. Then their friends and family wanted something made as well. Before I even realized this could be a business opportunity, it started to take off.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As far as life goes, it all comes in ebbs and flows and the same with business. The biggest struggle with starting Blue Skies & Ko was turning into a business person. I just had the mindset of creating items for fun when I needed to pivot into selling items. I think as a business owner that creates items to sell it really is a hard process to get used to the idea of putting a price tag on the items.
As you know, we’re big fans of Blue Skies & Ko. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Here at Blue Skies & Ko, we offer a wide variety of Boutique items. I love to offer clothing that can be dressed up or dressed down. My key to fashion is comfort and style can go hand and hand. We offer jewelry that is hand pieced and hand stamped, hand poured soy candles, and accessories to complete the fit. I really love that Blue Skies & Ko brings the full vibe. The part of the business that I am most proud of is that we are growing across the states! We are now popping up at events in Southern California and getting the Blue Skies & Ko name out there! You really never know what a leap of faith, some hard work, and passion can turn into. If you have had an idea in your mind my word of advice is GO FOR IT!! How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy? A lot of things… but it really comes down to the fact that I am sitting here writing out this interview. The fact that this is even an opportunity that happens all because of a trip to a craft store. It’s the simple things that really hit home for me most of the time. I still feel like I am living in a dream sometimes!
