Today we’d like to introduce you to Katresia Durden.
Katresia, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was around 7 or 8 years old. My older brother and I were at Greenbriar Mall and he complained of shoulder pain. Previously I had seen people on television giving massages so I told him I know what to do. He was skeptical, but he told me to go ahead. Well, much to his surprise it helped. He told my parents how good and I was and I would periodically give them massages if they needed it. I never took it seriously until 2008. Tired of working dead-end jobs without benefits and decent pay I became discouraged.
One Sunday my pastor told the congregation if we didn’t know our purpose to ask God. I did. Shortly after my school, Advanced Career Training sent me an email inviting me to join their Massage Therapy program. I didn’t have the money to go to school, but I was determined I knew this was my calling. My younger sister had received many messages from me so she decided to give me the money to enroll in Massage School. I excelled in class because it is my true passion and I know my purpose is to help others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Sometimes it can be discouraging when I have a slow week with not that many clients, but I don’t let that deter me. I just keep the faith and sometimes I work extra jobs.
