Today we’d like to introduce you to Katurah Turner.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have had a love for photography for more than 20 years. I picked up my first camera( borrowed from a family member) when my daughter was a baby. When we would take her to get her pictures taken, she would never smile. The photographers would practically stand on their heads trying to get her to laugh but she never would. So, I decided to give it a try, thinking that she would smile for me, she did, and here we are today. It was many many years later before I could afford to purchase my own 35mm film camera. When I finally was able to buy my first camera, I was introduced to another photographer who was established and shooting weddings. It was then that the seed was planted and my love of weddings began. I started shooting professional (the first wedding that I got paid for) in September of 2003. I will never forget it; I was so nervous. Thank God, everything turned out well.
In addition to taking people pictures, I have played around with taking landscape pictures. I love to travel; when I do, I like to bring back a piece of where I have been in the form of a photograph.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a people and landscape artist. When I am taking pictures of people, I am a portrait and wedding photographer, just like most wedding photographers I love capturing the love story. The name of my company is Itan Images. “itan” mean history recorder. As a photographer that is what I am doing. From the smallest details, I am recording a couple’s history. I am always honored when a couple calls and says Katurah; we would like for you to be our photographer. When I meet with the couple at our initial consultation, I start planning how I will capture their memories based on their chemistry.
Where do I get my inspiration for taking people pictures? I like to look at different fashion magazines. I study the lighting technique used, how the model is posed and the facial expressions. My goal is to have my clients see themselves as that high fashion model. The take away is that, despite our insecurities, we are all beautiful.
It has been in the past two years that I have acquired the skill of landscape photography. That happened as a result of traveling to different places.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
No, I don’t think that the role of the artist has changed. Because of world events, I think that now people are more inspired to be an artist. Art can change perspectives. I feel that today people are more creative then they have ever been. And that is a good thing.
I try not to let world events affect my ability to be creative.
