Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Brown.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m originally from Chicago and I’ve always had my heart set on law. I knew since middle school I wanted to work in the law field. I specifically asked my parents if I could sign up for classes that would allow me to finish high school a year early. They agreed. I succeeded and went on to attend Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. During my summer breaks I would return home to Chicago and work an internship at a law firm, where I learned the majority of my skills. I now knew I wanted to become an attorney. Shortly after graduating from college, I worked in many different law firms where I learned business practices as well as legal stances on various litigation. I also had my son, so instead of going to law school, I attended Emory University where I acquired my paralegal certificate and began working.
During this time, I used my experience and skills I’d obtained to help friends develop business plans and taught them how to legally set up their businesses. I went on to attend Strayer University where I received my masters in business management and marketing. This is where I learned more about business practices. I then began working as an in-house contract manager for a technology firm. I worked under an attorney who trained me for two days then quit. I was terrified. I was the head legal person there and I was not an attorney. I had to learn everything about the company from scratch and I had to learn fast. I worked in every area of the company, from business relations to licensing, permitting, litigation and claims. You name it, I did it. This gave me a spark to launch my business. The attorney who trained me said the only way I could succeed was if she left the company. I’m so grateful for her, because, it sparked a light in me and caused me to flourish in the company, but also personally.
I knew I loved business and law, but how could I tie them together? This is when I came up with the idea for my new business; Shelicit was born. I worked on Shelicit for a year and a half. The attorney that quit gave me an opportunity and now I wanted to do the same for others. So I collaborated with a team of successful women in marketing, branding, human resources, and more to establish what is Shelicit. Everything legal and business-related, we have got you covered. Launching this business was the best thing I could’ve done. I had the support of my best friends in my ear telling me to go for it and a mentor who took a chance. It is a blessing. It allows me to collaborate with great people and help small businesses reach their full potential. I am forever grateful and can’t wait to help the business flourish.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I had trouble picking a lane. There are so many people who offer business consulting help or classes about being entrepreneurs so I was timid about how I would compete with others. I had to sit down with myself and recognize that I am my only competition and I should only struggle with being better than what I was yesterday. Being a mom also plays a huge role. I am super ambitious, so I had to learn how to find balance. When do I sleep? When do I work on my business outside of working my 9-5? Do I quit? So many different things that keep me up at night. I had to truly decide if I wanted this and what is my why? My why helped me level out. I know I wanted something that I could pass down and I know I wanted to use my knowledge to help those who had no clue where to start or what steps to take to running a business legitimately.

We prefer to establish a relationship with a younger operation and continue to nurture that relationship over the long term. What sets us apart is; we are a hub for the business as a whole. While we focus on connecting owners with business lawyers and legalizing the business, we also help with other aspects such as photography for branding, marketing, web design, security for luxury brick and mortars, human resources and recruiting for companies who need to build their team. We are a full service business consulting firm. What I am most proud of as a company is that we are personable. The relationship built with the clients is on a personal level. They can send a quick text through our client portal and we answer any questions they might have. We build great trust with our clients, because they are trusting us with their confidential business information and for that, I’m grateful. Our clients trust us to ensure their businesses move forward.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Persistence. I never give up and I work hard! No matter what comes my way. No matter what, I stick to the plan and stick to the goal for everything. Life gets in the way, but you must keep going. If I have a deadline, I make the deadline. If a client needs something we stick to it. It’s key, because businesses and business models change over time, whether it be a shift in the market or acquisition, so we must change and grow with them along the way. This is key.
