Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylah Lovelace-Huddleston.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a believer, growing up in church and lover of all things creative, It’s been a journey discovering who I am and what exactly I’m meant to do. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, I grew up around all things across the diaspora of art. Everything from dance, fashion, home decor, and music were forms I had and still have a deep appreciation for. I began teaching dance classes to young black women in the Atlanta area and got a residency at a local Stockbridge studio in my teens and early 20s.
Fast forwarding to 2020, the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, I stepped out on faith and started a home decor company called Glory Spaces. I had the pleasure of serving my clients by bringing their decor visions to life. I also did space consulting and launched several decor campaigns. But after two years and a big life change such as marrying my purpose partner l, I really began to feel God pulling me to share more of myself and my faith in Jesus Christ.
I knew that I was being taken in a different direction that was more about being vulnerable and reaching people through the vain of content creation than business. I quickly grew a passion and gift for creative and faith-based writing, being on camera, and creating valuable home decor content. So I pivoted, started a lifestyle, faith, and home decor blog, and morphed Glory Spaces into what is now Kaylah In Bloom.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many other creatives, I’ve faced many obstacles. The biggest being imposter syndrome, comparison, fear of failure and judgment. However, I feel like being a Christian creative has come with a unique set of challenges that have really molded me into who I am in this moment.
Because they were not one in the same, there was a time when I tried to mesh my life in God with my natural life. It also naturally reflected in my creativity. I tried to mix in with the crowd. I tried to fit in and change who I was for the acceptance of the world. I remember always feeling like the oddball. Like I was weird or wouldn’t grow as fast on my social media platforms because I shared about Christ. I remember feeling ashamed of my faith. And it all hindered me from truly walking in my assignment from God, using my full gifts, and in the way God really designed for them to be used.
Pivoting, creative blocks, and weariness are among the many obstacles I have taken on and continue to take on. But I’ve learned they come with the territory. It’s been a long road and a slow game but it’s been a good ride never the less.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Kaylah in Bloom is my number one passion project. I started the brand because I wanted to inspire women to embrace all of their life’s blooms. The mission is to help them understand that everything from the weed-like moments to flowers-like moments have worked together for their overall good orchestrated by God. Through sharing the gospel, married and new mom life as I’m lead, I pray that they feel encouraged to embrace every low and high of their personal journeys. While I’m no longer offering home decor business services, I do still provide valuable decor inspiration, tips, and tricks through decorating my own home on my social media platforms and blog. I am currently working on expanding the brand and starting a YouTube channel this month!
Along with running my own brand, I have my hands in several other things. I’m so blessed to have the opportunity to co-direct a Jonesboro-based non-profit youth organization with my husband, Cedric, who is incredibly gifted and anointed for youth. We are hard at work pursuing our collective dream to start our own Christian academy in the upcoming years!
I am also an avid servant in ministry where I dance on the praise dance team, teach Sunday school for our 3 to 5 years old class, and manage our social media platforms. As I’ve learned that I have such a passion for teaching dance, I am currently assistant coaching a hip hop majorette dance team in McDonough, Georgia, The Flame Aura Majorettes. Although I love being running Kaylah in Bloom, being involved at my church, running a youth organization, my number one job will wife and new mom life as I’m expecting my first baby in August! My hands are full but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes to searching for guidance and a mentor, I would just say look for someone who will believe in you even when you don’t believe in yourself, someone who will pray on your behalf, and who is led by God. A God-ordained relationship with a mentor can be extremely influential on our journeys. However, I would also say be sure not to vest too much in outside people. The tasks and dreams God put within us are not always meant to be understood by others. Often times as creatives, we can get caught up in validation from others that we never make moves. While we should search for mentors, we also have to make sure we can hear from God regarding our vision for ourselves.
