Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylyne Gomez.
Kaylyne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About three years ago, while my husband was attending college and I was a stay at home mom, I decided I needed to find something to define me, rather than just being a mom. One anniversary came and went along with a beginner camera. Ironically, a mom friend of mine was wedding photography and online photography teacher. She took time out of her busy schedule to teach me the basics of shooting manual. I started charging for “pay what you can” sessions for low-income families because I knew what it was like to want to have good family photos, but couldn’t afford it. From there, I realized I really enjoyed capturing the genuine moments between a family. A few years later, here I am with an expensive camera and some decent editing skills.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has absolutely NOT been a smooth road. From living in a college town with so many aspiring photographers, being married so young, and being a young mom. It was tough starting out. I went through so phases of wanting to quit, but once I shot a session it was like “runner’s high.” I always felt confident after a session.
My current struggle is moving. Being an army wife and having to constantly move, build clientele, figure out how much people are willing to pay in that area without compromising yourself is rough. Photography is a bumpy road, but SO worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Since I am just starting out, I don’t have a specialty. I know what I like, and what I don’t like, but still figuring out to get there. Eventually, I would love to specialize in Boudior, Milk baths, and possibly birth because the ability that you gift someone to see them through your lens is just so rewarding. I also have a sweet spot for small families. I just love capturing the genuine natural, interactions between small families. As far as editing goes, I love dark and moody photos, strong contrast, saturated colors.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was VERY shy. I whispered all the time, never raised my voice, HATED public speaking. I would do anything to get out of speech class. I like to keep to my self. My favorite subject in school was art. I come from a long line of the artist. I’ve always been good at drawing and just being creative, in general. So, it’s no surprise that I ended up doing photography!
