Today we’d like to introduce you to Ke Gao.
Ke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a freelance illustrator, but my undergraduate major was. While I was working on my undergrad, I was in a particularly confusing state. At a very young age, everyone had a sense of uncertainty about the future. At that time, I began to pick up the brush to express myself in order to resolve this feeling and express myself. Then, I found out that I was enchanted by painting, and I also found the industry that I want to go into.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As I have pursued painting, it has been a very smooth road, even though my undergrad major was not art. I told my family that I wanted to paint. When I wanted to go abroad to study art, my family immediately agreed. In fact, I had been planning how to convince my family how I could live as a painter for a while. As a result, they immediately agreed. Perhaps the most difficult thing for me now is to adapt to a lifestyle and learning style that is completely different from that in China. Before I came to the United States, I didn’t have experience living in an English-speaking country. The first thing I worried about was how to take care of myself overseas. Although this was indeed a big challenge, the feeling of reaping new harvest every day is very good. I think these experiences will become inspiration and material in my creations in the future.
Coco Gao – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Currently, I am a freelance illustrator. My main method of painting is combining realistic elements. I am now pursuing a combination of characters and scenes to create a magnificent worldview. Readers can read more stories from my illustrations. I have tried to create comics. Many of my illustrations are based on comics, so this is a feature that makes me different from other illustrators. Comics are usually easier to read and understand than illustrations. That is why my paintings are more straightforward and simpler than those of many other illustrators. I hope that my work can be seen by more people, and they are not confused.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When I can create the pictures that I want to express in my heart without reservation, I feel I am successful. At the same time, when I am told by someone that they like my work, I feel I have achieved success.
