Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley Douglas.
Kelley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Lip Psych was created to integrate all things beauty and mental health together. The purpose of my brand is to celebrate a woman’s outer beauty as well as inner beauty. Often, we struggle to cope with mental health issues due to lack of knowledge. My hope is that my company educates the community on real life mental health issues and empower them cope with it. I am a mental health clinician and a freelance makeup artist. I’ve always wanted to own a beauty brand but I didn’t want it to be ordinary. It took me some time to figure how I can use my platform to help my community. Many people struggle with mental health issues and continue to struggle because of worldwide views on mental health. My brand advocates for normalizing therapy and looking good while doing it! Currently Lip Psych sells cosmetics such as eyeshadow palettes, lipsticks, glosses, lip scrubs, and a host of beauty tools. In the future the line will evolve to full face glam and skincare!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has not been smooth the entire time! The business was launched during the current pandemic. I’ve faced obstacles with product production and shipping due to the changes we were experiencing worldwide. Customers were apprehensive about ordering in effort to not contract the virus. Sales went up and down. I had to find creative ways to still generate revenue and keep my brand and products relevant. I started offering virtual makeup classes and tutorials on how to use the products how sell. Soon women everywhere began to adjust to life stuck at home and wanted to still feel beautiful so I capitalized on that.
Please tell us about Lip Psych.
My company is a retail-based company that sells cosmetics that advocate and promote mental health awareness. I also offer makeup services as a freelance makeup artist. I am known for teaching and servicing women who are typically not makeup wearers and showing them tips and tricks on how to glam up their everyday look. I have serviced special occasion events such as weddings, baby showers, prom and bridal showers as a makeup artist. I am most proud of the testimonials and reviews my clients give when they try my products or get their makeup done by me. I love their reactions and to see the excitement of feeling beautiful and happy. My company is different from other brands because it has a powerful mission that aims to better individuals that in turn benefits the entire community. My products aren’t just for profit but for change. The quality of my products is amazing and all for very affordable prices!
I have patterned with a local girls group home for teen mothers and pregnant teens as a big sister project. The program is called Mirrors and Music which challenges these young women to look deep inside themselves, nurture their gift, and dance to the beat of their own drum!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is pretending to be the Jackson 5 with my two sisters and two brothers. Because I was the only dancer, I would always overdue the choreography!
