Meet Ken Shigley Jr of Pick Your Fitness in Brookhaven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Shigley Jr.

Ken, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been somewhat of a fitness/sports junky but while playing college football, I learned exactly how far I could push myself physically. Not long after our first season ended, I became very sick and was eventually diagnosed with a severe case of Crohn’s disease. I ended up spending six months in and out of hospitals which resulted in me needing to have major surgery inevitably ending my football career.

After my surgery and two months of recovering and rehab, I was back on my feet and eager to get my life back. But over that 8-month span of time, the illness had made me lose roughly 60 lbs which once I was allowed to eat food again, I put back on rather quickly and then some. I knew right away that I needed to learn all about how I got this illness in the first place.

I became obsessed with mental and physical health and wanted to show everyone that I didn’t need doctors or boxes full of medicine to get my health back.

Ever since then, my biggest goal has been to share my knowledge and experience with others to help them understand the importance of eating healthy and staying active so that what happened to me will hopefully never happen to them.
For that reason alone, I believe that I am one of the top personal trainers in Atlanta.

Has it been a smooth road?
Besides my overall personal health, in the beginning, one other major bump in the road was the passing of my mother two years ago. Luckily, soon thereafter, I met my future wife who helped hold me together and convinced me to continue pursuing my dream.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pick Your Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
Pick your fitness is merely supposed to promote and encourage overall well being through nutrition and physical activity. Over the past five years, I’ve trained hundreds of different people ranging in ages from 10-87 years old. I’ve made it my goal to help every single one of them not just reach their personal goals but far exceed their expectations.

I’m most proud of myself as a company because over the years I’ve had so many people thank me for helping to change their life for the better.

I believe what sets me apart from all the rest is that I truly care about the people I work with and I care deeply about them bettering themselves and I’ll stop at almost nothing to help them reach their goals.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I plan to eventually hire several other personal trainers to join me in helping as many people reach their physical health and fitness goals. Also, I would like to continue putting together large group events to try and encourage people to be active.
