Meet Kendrick Johnson of North County of St. Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendrick Johnson.

Hi Kendrick, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
With possessing the skill of being good at drawing & others taking enjoyment from it, my interest in the craft derives from wondering how it would be to take my art to another level. I’ve quickly understood the craft requires more than that, & with studying & practice, challenging myself became something that pointed me in the direction of my love for it. I’ve been tattooing a few years over ten. Initially pursuing a self taught path, moving to an apprenticeship not long after choosing to stick with it & working in a few shops over the years. Currently operating a private studio. Becoming an artist has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, teaching me discipline in areas I wasn’t sure I needed it & taking me places I never thought I’d have the opportunity to see. Thank you to my clients & to the many wonderful people I’ve encountered on my journey for that.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been the fairest? I can honestly say no, but there are lessons in every journey you must take with you. Understanding the value in what you offer as an artist & what you stand by has to be a standard you maintain consistently. A struggle along the way was not letting slower seasons get to me & to keep pushing because someone is always watching. Promo, Promo, Promo.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a tattoo artist, I’m referred to as Jak (Abstract Jak). I specialize in abstract tattoos, realism, illustrative, & cover up work. My creativity is preferred by many. Though I service who so ever appreciates me & my artistry, the majority of my clientele carries a fair amount of melanin with them in their daily lives. Considering the melanin mention, what sets me apart from others is I’m not reluctant to show that its possible to have that detail/color displayed beautifully on darker tones.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like getting the job done & having fun while doing it.
