Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenn Bivins.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kenn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m an illustrator turned author who has an affinity toward telling both heart-warming and heart-wrenching tales of redemption. Through my novels and non-fiction, I aspire for my readers to identify with the characters and themes that I craft through suspense, intrigue, action and the unexpected.
My career started in advertising, animation and comic books and has evolved over time to include writing and web development. I now function as a hybrid of sorts where my projects are an amalgam of all of those skillsets to some degree.
I’m the author of the critically acclaimed novels, “Pious” and the “Wedding & Disaster of Felona Mabel.”
My latest project is a non-fiction series called “39 Lessons” which features a shortlist of observations and wisdom that can help contribute to building mentally and emotionally strong children. It also serves as a great kickstarter for having engaging conversations with boys and girls of all ages. It was born of my love of being a dad, godfather and mentor.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always known that I wanted a creative career, but I also have an innate entrepreneurial spirit. Therein lies my constant struggle. There is no set path to follow and finding support is more difficult than I assumed.
For example, I thought when my first book, Pious, was published that all of my friends and family would buy it, tell others about it and I would be a great success. The reality was quite the opposite. My success has been slow and most of my supporters have been initial strangers.
Please tell us about Invisible Ennk Press.
My company, Invisible Ennk Press, is an independent press devoted to publishing literary fiction and nonfiction that enriches and engages both imaginations and perspectives.
I want to create and publish stories that give voice and visibility to the unheard. I want to foster an honest dialogue around social and personal issues that impact us at our core.
The name, Invisible Ennk, is both an anagram of my name as well as a tribute to one of his favorite novels of all time, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, all the while playing on the idea of ink as it relates to literary and visual works.
I’m a one-man team so far and I’ve been responsible for the content, artwork, design, packaging, administrative duties, distribution and advertising of a product I’m quite proud of. I will stand out over time from other publishers, large and small because I believe in producing experiences with my audience. Not just selling a product.
For example, with my last novel, the Wedding & Disaster of Felona Mabel, instead of doing store signings, I chose to do a book club tour so that I could meet and interact with my readers.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Most of my favorite memories are in nature, exploring. Not much has changed. Nature is my sanctuary and fuels my imagination and thought.
