Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennis Clark.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from NY born and raised, once a Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, and now residing and building in the Atlanta area. Years ago, I discovered myself amongst many others searching for their dreams in sunny California. Music has always been in me, in fact, at a very young age I started writing songs and expressing my creativity through dance. Sharing my music was my calling and I was willing to leave everything in order to pursue it. Driven by faith, in 2014, I packed up my car and drove across the country from my hometown of Roosevelt NY to Los Angeles.
The journey surely evolved and tested my faith, but I wasn’t discouraged enough to stop. Within my first year in Los Angeles, I was blessed to released two singles “Forever” and “Bout Time” ft. DJ Antonio Fresco.
I’ve since had the pleasure of working and writing with some of the industry’s best producers, allowing me to grow and shape my craft. My musical catalog features multiple styled genres from R&B, Hip Hop, Pop, and EDM, to my now favorite focus – The Contemporary Christian sound. & Gospel.
Growing up, I didn’t grow up in a church home, but my mother always sewed seeds of Christianity as much as she could. We would go to church, pray, and read the bible, but at a certain age, she let us seek and find God for ourselves. Throughout my early adult years, I didn’t understand what faith was. I questioned a lot about God and basically disconnected from all my mom taught us as kids about who Jesus is. She did the best she could. It wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles and experienced Gods love for myself. Thats when everything changed. My heart changed for the music was creating, and the decision to create songs with the message of faith/testimony started. My true purpose was birthed in the placed I least expected.
With this newfound direction in life, the year 2018 started with Atlanta on my heart. The good Lord would not me rest until I decided to venture out and take yet another leap of faith. There was something special about Atlanta and something that I needed to pursue here. Aside from meeting my Beautiful Fiancee, The culture, the city, and the people were some of the driving factors with my decision to relocate. I then moved last march 2019 and it has been a blessing ever since. Once on Atlanta turf, I was blessed enough to connect with fellow believers of Christ as well as some of the top up & coming Christian Music Producers, Artist, writers/clothing designers that are making an impact on the genre and community. I then knew that this was the place I needed to be.
My goal is to impact my generation and generations to come by creating music to inspire, motivate, and create new ways of thinking and expression all through bold faith. I want the testimony to shine through every song so people can connect and ultimately become closer to the father that created all of us. This is the ministry God gave me and the songwriting/singing is just a tool to bring people closer together and above all closer to him. Here in Atlanta is where that new vision and mission can grow to its full potential.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the struggles along the way is dealing with opposition. Closed doors, people who don’t understand your vision or care about it. Also finding the right team to work with.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
As a Christian recording artist, I specialize in creating music. I write 95% of my music and work with various producers. I do have a few go-to writers for certain projects. I also do vocal production and song arrangements. With my music, I’m mostly known for being different. What sets me apart is that in the Christian genre, I like to step outside of the safe box. I like to experiment with different genres and sometimes merge or fuse styles/sounds to create a new one with the same faith-based message. I do this with the experience I have writing other genres melodiously and sometimes with the sounds created in the studio. It’s truly a blessing when I get the opportunity to sit back and hear what God inspired me to create.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very shy until I was on stage or put in some sort of spotlight. I learned very early to conquer my fears of a stage before conquering my fears talking to the cutest girl in class. I would always have visions and I would draw them. I was artistic & very dreamy at times. My childhood consisted of playing outside, listening to music an envision music videos or simply feeling exactly what the artist felt while singing it. I was a music junkie. As the years went by, I had my share of troublemaking in the ghetto lol but ultimately, I became a creator all while still being a little shy and sometimes quirky or silly.
