Today we’d like to introduce you to Kent Knowles and Travis Carr.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am an American figurative painter living in Roswell, GA. The son of an Air Force Chaplain, I spent much of my life traveling to interesting places, experiencing the diverse geography and cultures of the world. I took an interest in art when I was a teenager and it informed my personality and gave me an identity that I could transport from place to place.
Although painting is my primary medium, I have developed a strong interest in ceramics recently, working with my friend and neighbor Travis Carr on an endeavor called Porchlight Pottery.
We are having a blast making custom ceramics and the improvisation and creativity it involves has given my work new life.
Please tell us about your art.
I can say the most consistent subject in my work has been women in peril. The figures, which are almost always painted from imagination, promote anatomical theatrics and expressive qualities that don’t necessarily exist in nature. I have come to realize that, no matter the narrative, the figures and environments serve as an illustration of whatever is happening in my life at the time they are painted. This can span from a simple excursion to the beach to falling in love to the insecurities of parenthood. I don’t consider myself an illustrator, but the work is definitely a reflection of my circumstances and fears.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I think that making art requires a bit of solitude and is a necessary aspect of the discipline. It may be a good strategy to find fellow creatives that compliment your interests or challenge your principles, but in my opinion the best work is accomplished when no one else is around.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am very fortunate to exhibit my work in Atlanta as well as other galleries in the U.S. My most recent exhibition “Youth” runs until the end of June at Besharat Museum Gallery in the Castleberry Hill Arts District.
I am also represented by the Linda Matney Gallery in Williamsburg, VA.
My greatest supporter and longtime exhibitor is also my employer – Savannah College of Art and Design. I have work available for purchase via SCAD ART SALES, in addition to ShopSCAD, which recently acquired some pieces from Porchlight Pottery.
