Meet Kenya Brantley of Greenhouse Mercantile in South Atlanta-Newnan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Brantley.

Kenya, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Wow!!! Where do I begin? Well, in 2008 my husband and I moved to Newnan, but I realized I had a lot of items that needed to go after the move. Rather than sell those things through Craigslist or another avenue, I decided to get a booth in an antique mall called Stairway to Heaven in downtown Newnan. And right there, I was bitten by the retail bug! I was very successful at that booth and actually decided to start buying things for the purpose of selling them. I did that for about a year and then start selling at Scott’s Antique Market in Atlanta. Again, I was successful, but it was labor-intensive and I begin looking for a location that I could call my own. I found that very place in downtown Senoia in a little red barn behind a quaint bed and breakfast. I remained in Senoia for a year and, after building up my confidence a bit, decided to move my shop to Serenbe, where I remained for the next two years. I am now located in downtown Newnan, which is absolutely amazing!!! And since, we live in Newnan, it only made since to make it my permanent home for Greenhouse Mercantile.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If you ask any entrepreneur, they will probably tell you that starting your own business is not a smooth road and definitely not for the faint of heart. I think one of my biggest struggles was the income to start my business. But I think, it’s important to search different avenues for funding and remember to be flexible.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Greenhouse Mercantile – what should we know?
Greenhouse Mercantile is a collection of curated goods… a lifestyle store filled with all the things we love. We believe in products that last a lifetime. We support the makers. Greenhouse Mercantile is pro-America. It’s pro-local artists. It’s pro-fair trade. It’s products that make a difference and give back… products that you can buy and be proud of. It is a sanctuary for people that seek out the extraordinary. It is a reminder to people that past objects should never be forgotten. It is proof that prayer and faith work. It is a feeling…

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Gratitude. I’ve learned that being thankful will take you further than you thought you could actually go.
