Meet Kenya Johnson of PowerInYourCurl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Johnson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kenya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I first began my healthy hair journey in 2009, I was desperate to find a way to retain length. My relaxed hair had plateaued and remained stagnant at shoulder-length for FIVE YEARS. That’s half a decade! I knew my hair was growing… new growth arrived faithfully every 6-8 weeks. But like clockwork, every time I went in for a relaxer touch-up, my ends were in such bad shape that the same amount of hair that grew in at the roots – was cut at the ends. What I didn’t know then was my lack of knowledge of what my hair truly needed, paired with a nonexistent regimen, resulted in a cycle of negligent hair care, constant breakage, dryness, and a very frustrated Kenya.

After doing some research I realized that relaxers were not the only way I could wear my hair. I could stop chemically treating my hair and allow it to grow naturally curly from my scalp. By 2010, I chopped all my relaxed hair off and fully embraced my curls.

…Boy was I in for a rude awakening. Wearing my hair natural wasn’t as simple as it sounded, but I was determined to have healthy hair that I was proud of and didn’t constantly worry about. I began investing thousands of hours into learning the different curly hair types and how this determines the techniques and products needed to support a healthy hair regimen. I also learned from industry professionals and hair care business owners to supplement my knowledge of the ins and outs of natural hair care.

By 2015, everyone around me was beginning to notice a difference in the health and vibrancy of my hair. My natural hair was healthy, full and at bra-strap length, it was the longest I had ever seen it!

In an effort to pour into the women around me who wanted their own natural hair transformation, I decided to start a YouTube channel in 2016. I set out to be the natural hair helper that many Black women need but don’t have access to because the women around them don’t quite understand their hair either. My focus has always been showing and teaching healthy hair techniques that every woman can actually use day-to-day.

By 2019, my online community had grown to over 95,000 beautiful women who were serious about learning their hair and feeling amazing and confident in who they naturally are. Through conversations that I had with these women, I realized that a lot of them were still struggling with finding products, a solid hair regimen and getting the knowledge they needed for their specific hair type.

I decided to take my teaching videos on YouTube a step further and designed a natural hair coaching service to help Black women with creating custom natural hair regimens and personalized natural hair solutions for each unique soul directly.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I know that this life experience isn’t about reaching the goal we may originally have in mind, it’s about the process of growth and unfolding that occurs along the way. The fluidity of my process to becoming The Curl Coach™ and a thoughtful Content Creator has been directly tied to me ALLOWING myself to be who I was created to be and not forcing myself to be who I felt I was supposed to be. For years I discounted my gift of innerstanding the emotion, frustration, and depression that so many women with curly, kinky and coily hair feel when they go years not knowing how to maintain their crown and are not fully confident in their appearance. I also didn’t realize my passion for helping women solve their hair issues and how this directly affects their quality of life. Once I stopped sleeping on myself and allowed my gift to create my path for me, things got much smoother. 🙂

Please tell us about PowerInYourCurl.
I help women in their purpose master their natural hair so you can feel comfortable in who you are, love your hair & BE BIG in every area of your life. Your hair is the first thing you see when you look in the mirror and the first thing others see when they meet you. If you don’t feel comfortable or confident in your crown, this shows to everyone around you and affects how you show up for yourself.

I specialize in teaching women about their unique Hair Identity and using this personal knowledge about their hair and lifestyle to create custom hair regimens and healthy hair techniques. I make caring for your natural hair easy by giving you the blueprint to healthy hair and offering coaching sessions to teach you the knowledge you are currently missing.

If you experience constantly dry hair, constant breakage and/or constant worry about finding natural hair products then I am who you call to get to the root of the issue so that you can be your own hair goals!

As The Curl Coach™, what sets me apart from a hairstylist or hair blogger is that I have created a space for you to receive long term support with your natural hair and my #1 goal is empowering you to become confident using your own knowledge and intuition to care for your hair. By the end of your coaching, you will not need to rely on anyone but yourself to have healthy hair.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Everything that was or wasn’t had to be so in order for me to be right where I am today. I wouldn’t change a thing.

However, a lesson that I have learned through owning my hair coaching business is the longer you hold back on sharing your light and unique gifts with the world, the longer those who need you will remain stuck and may even struggle because you are not there to guide them in the way that only you can.
