Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Russell.
Kenya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a southern girl, born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. Since a young girl, I’ve always enjoyed bringing people together. I channeled that passion until it starts making sense (post-grad). After graduating from the University of Alabama with a Bachelors Degree in Public Relations, I began curating art shows and live performances in my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Those shows created a curated community of creatives which is now @southernmadecreatives on Instagram. We curate shows for predominantly black creatives and entrepreneurs of all mediums and capacities with the goal of inspiring one another and building community.
Outside of my role as a curator, professionally I am a Digital Marketer who specializes in solving business branding problems using UI and UX design. I have been working in this industry for two years and achieves results through increasing conversion and engagement for businesses with websites or online platforms.
Has it been a smooth road?
Entrepreneurship in any capacity is no smooth road. My journey has looked a lot like walking purely on faith and allowing God to guide my steps as I precariously moved forward with tears streaming down my face. I faced many struggles, from being isolated and feeling as if no one understood my vision, to being financially vulnerable and trying to figure out if this thing was even worth it. I ran into a lot of dead-end projects, relationships and perspectives along the way. The struggles I’ve endured has made this journey uniquely mine and honestly, quite beautiful. I’m a firm believer that when we are weak God is at his strongest… he hasn’t let me down yet.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is one of the few places in the south which champions black entrepreneurs. There is a lieu of resources available in Atlanta that new entrepreneurs can get involved with to help grow their networks, expand their professional skillsets and grow their business. There’s always room to grow for community amongst black creatives, but there’s a solid foundation in Atlanta that is currently operating well. The only thing I would like to see is more collaboration.
