Meet Kenyetta Kendrick of beKReativ Designs in Jonesboro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenyetta Kendrick.

Kenyetta, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
beKReativ Designs started as a hobby in 2009. I was a 911 dispatcher working overnight when I saw an infomercial for a personal screen printing system called the YUDU. I was amazed like most infomercials have us and ordered it on my break. At the time my twins were small babies and creating and crafting was my outlet. The first thing I printed was matching onesies. I then started making 911 Tee shirts to wear to work. My coworkers began to support me and I pursued designing and tee shirt making as a business. Designing on the YUDU soon evolved into me investing in myself and purchasing several other machines to grow beKReativ Designs. As time went on, I started teaching others to design and create tee shirts.

Fast forward to February 2014, I wanted to have an event where everyone would make their own shirts. I called it Sip & Screen. It was an awesome trial run and it birthed Craft & Connect and Designing Under the Influence by beKReativ Designs.

While I still make custom tees my love is teaching and hosting “social crafting parties”. beKReativ Designs has done its part to transform crafting from what was once something viewed as boring and for old ladies to creative, unique experiences and events where people create memories and masterpieces.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think like most moms balancing business and family has its challenges. My family has gone through major transitions since 2009 when I first started. I think the challenges helped build my business to what it is now. If it weren’t for needing some time to release and have girl time, there would be no Girlfriend Fridays nor Designing Under the Influence. If it weren’t for needing to do what I love while also having my kids with me there would be no Craft & Connect for kids. I had to turn my challenges into building blocks and work with what I have.

Please tell us about beKReativ Designs.
Designing Under the Influence is not just about crafting; we are a girl’s night out or in craft experience. We host events where ladies can network and mingle while creating memories and masterpieces in a safe and fun environment at the same time providing local bars, restaurants, dives, pubs, and event centers with new faces, more clientele, and additional consumers. We are known for our Tee Parties/Sip & Press (Custom Tee Shirt Design Parties), Sip & Stone( Rhinestone Tee Shirt Design Parties) and Wine & Design(Wine Glass Decorating Parties).

What sets beKReativ Designs apart is my love for what I do. The look of concentration while everyone is learning and designing and the look of awe when they complete their projects really makes me happy at every event.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My childhood was actually great and I have so many fond memories, but when I think of me being the creative person I am, I think of my Mom and Grandma. I can remember my mother making me a clown costume for an elementary school program. The creativity was amazing. I remember it all right down to the wig made of pantyhose and yarn. My Grandma was also a super creative person. I remember her making me and my cousins purses and hats out of matching material. I never have to wonder where my or my daughter’s creativity comes from.
