Meet Kerrington Griffin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerrington Griffin.

Hi Kerrington, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I used to want to always go to the nail salon with my mother and grandmother. That was their monthly routine– to take a Saturday afternoon for pampering and maintenance. I loved sitting with them. I enjoyed watching people come in to relax. Sometimes, our whole family would go to the nail salon together and fill up the entire wall of pedicure chairs.

I always wanted to wear long nails, but my mother told me I had to be able to keep up with them myself. After I started working, I started to teach myself how to use nail polish after carefully watching our nail technicians. I loved to draw, so I painted on little portraits on my nails. Then, I started using acrylic in high school, but couldn’t figure out why they would pop off so easily. After graduating high school at 17, I was accepted and admitted into Clark Atlanta University less than 30 days later, where I started to practice again in my dorm in 2019. I was a full-time student, working at an unpaid internship with no car. I later secured an on-campus job, where I saved every penny I had. I put all my checks into buying a nail kit from Amazon. I enrolled in cosmetology school in 2020 during my senior of undergrad, and from there, the rest is history. I am now a licensed nail technician and private studio owner, looking forward to opening my own salon soon.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing worth having comes easy. Because I was in undergrad and cosmetology school simultaneously, I had a lot of work to do and wasn’t too happy about it either. But I had a plan. In Georgia, it takes about 4- 5 months to complete the program, but I was a graduating senior heavily involved in other areas of life, so it took me about a year to finish. When I took the theory portion of the state board exam the first time, I failed by four points. I retook it months later and exceeded it by 10 points. Within the last two years, I’ve learned more about the legalities than anything. When people start businesses, they expect 100% of the money they make to be what they pocket for the day; that couldn’t be further from the truth. Until you have the proper equipment and steady clientele, your “profit” goes towards inventory, salon furniture, your choice of business structure, career/salon licensure, etc. I’ve also had a hard time picking a suitable place of business. I’ve worked in buildings where I’ve dealt with poor management, poor business ethics and morals, and simple misappropriation of authority. Sometimes, life will not be fair, but it’s all about how you stand up and move forward.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed nail artist. I say artist because I do more than just ‘nails’. I specialize in French tips and nail art; I’m known in my profession for both. I love what I do. My current clients love bringing me the most outlandish designs and I complete them with ease and love. I am most proud of being able to come so far in business in such little time, despite what I’ve gone through in my personal life within the last six years. I’ve gone from a dorm to my garage, to my basement, to working out of my car, to a private salon studio, and I still have a ways to go with the world to conquer. I’m determined to build a desirable future for myself, my family, and my community. Tenacity, determination, and of course, customer service is what sets me apart from everyone else. I don’t run a stereotypical nail salon where you wait around for hours and then are rushed out with a design you barely like. Show me what you desire, and I will take my time to complete the work so that you are 10000% satisfied. After you leave, you will have gained a friend, a therapist, a nail tech, and a fresh, impeccable set!

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
A simple referral can go a long way. Word-of-mouth referrals travel faster than any direct message, text, or social media post. It’s the oldest, but the best form of support. And it’s mostly how I get my clients. Tell a friend, a cousin, a sibling, tell your banker! Tell your pastor! Tell everybodaaayyy! *Beyoncé voice*

I also have my Bachelor of Arts in mass media with a concentration in Radio/TV/Film, so I LOVE creating content to post. Editing pictures and videos is my favorite thing to do. For any collaborations with any other local businesses, please send an email to KashMoneyCoLLC@Gmail.com.
