Meet Kevin Brown of Bydian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Brown.

Hi Kevin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Where do I even begin? I started at 16 in the summer of 2018 actually, by this point I had been watching hundreds of of youtube videos on how to make wigs and install them because the plan was to actually do a big chop and wear wigs until my hair grows out. My mum had been relaxing my hair and doing my hair for most of my life so when she got busy and wasn’t able to do my hair and also my hair was seriously damaged I took matters into my own hands. Summer of 2018 is here I finally buy human hair from alixpress and all the tools/products I need to make and install a frontal wig. I was so happy I could do it, it was like another thing ticked off my list because I could already do most styles i.e braids, pony’s, crotchet.

Then as the weeks went by the girls in my town noticed that I can do frontals now, everyone already knew I could do hair so they started encouraging me to start a business I was scared at first because it felt weird getting paid by other people I only ever got money from my parents lmao.

My dad would give me weekly lunch money so I saved some of that up, bought more hair products made an instagram account and DKWIGS was born. My business was previously called Dkwigs

Once I started I had my friends come and try different hairstyles. I had my friends post my page nearly every single day on snapchat. I paid for ads when I had the money to do so that’s what boosted my brand for a bit. But it was kinda hard to manage my business and be at school at the same time so I wasn’t as consistent with the social media side of things, but I tried where I could. Now today I’m running a 5 figure business that I’ve now named after my mom (Bydian) and I’ve also graduated from university.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Being that I started young I definitely had older woman take the piss with certain things. Whilst I was in school i would only work friday evening saturdays and some sundays. I had a lady ask me during the week to just pluck her closure and I agreed as it was just plucking it wouldn’t taken long, she’s brought her wig and it was all matted up. She wanted to me to now detangle the wig, install the wig, then had the nerve to be mad at me because I didn’t do the edge the way her previous hairstylist did. After some time I started to tighten up because I had a problem with not saying no and letting some things slide with my policy.

I have some clients try not to pay me, I’ve had some mouldy wigs arrive and so much more. There was a point where I was like surely I shouldn’t have to deal with this all.

There was a point where I only had 7 clients in on month I’ll never get over that I really thought what am I doing wrong? On the brighter side at least I had clients.

Also my mental health was rocky for a while it was definitely hard to have to get up and still show up for my clients especially when I was at university, it was at its worst. I am very self critical so when some season were slow or my work wasn’t doing as great as I wanted it to be I’d be in tears at the same time I’m trying to do my assignments, better myself as a person and also get my relationship with God up to par it was hard! However by the grace of God I was definitely able to

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bydian?
Bydian is named after my mother Diane. Shes my best friend everything and more so I decided to honour her by naming my business after her.

I specialise in wig installs, wig making, styling, bridal, sew-ins and tape ins. I also sell raw/virgin hair. I’m definitely know for my frontal sew-ins and the way I layer and curl hair. Whew!!!

As much as I keep my brand professional I also allow some of my personality into it. I know some people are apprehensive when their booking stylist assuming that they might be mean or strict, because I put my personality out there I feel like it’s extremely inviting, it also allows people to come to their appointments knowing that it’s gonna be a safe and comfortable environment.

I’m so big on hospitality and comfort that’s just how I was raised. I was always told anyone that enters your space should be comfortable and well taken care of. I’ve also, some how, become a “therapist”. I’ve had so many of my clients break down to me, tell me about their lives their worries and struggles and some I would’ve only just met and within 20 minutes of their appointment they’ve found comfort in telling me about their lives. when this first started happening I found it so strange that people would be so comfortable to just tell me these things about themselves you’ve only just me !? Honestly I love the fact that I can help someone’s day be able to give someone advice and it not just being a hair appointment. I see all my client as sisters, especially because I have none, and that I need to protect and nurture them. It’s always a fun time in my chair. I’ve never had a dull day I’ve had the odd one too weird Client but that doesn’t affect me at all my business is heavily centred around the power of Jesus Christ and everything I do and everything that I say to my clients is of the Holy Spirit I wait from the authority of God to be able to give advice to the clients and pray over those that enter my studio.

I want readers to know that my brand, @Bydiannn_, is built on excellence, intention, and genuine care. My goal is always to make my clients feel confident, cared for, and seen. Whether someone is coming to me for a special occasion, self-care, or to learn my techniques through my 1–1 training sessions, I put my heart and detail into everything I do.

I also want people to understand that I’m committed to growth, education, and quality. My 1–1 sessions aren’t just tutorials; they’re personalised, hands-on training where I teach my exact techniques step by step. I love helping others elevate their skills and turn their passion into purpose.

But above all, I want people to know that my journey is guided by God. My relationship with God is the foundation of my brand. Every step I’ve taken, every door that has opened, and every client that has trusted me has been because of His grace. I pray over my business constantly, for creativity, for protection, and for the ability to serve people with excellence. My brand reflects not just my talent, but the faith, discipline, and favour that God has placed over my life.

So when people come to me, they’re not just booking a service, they’re receiving the result of years of passion, practice, and spiritual alignment. My brand represents beauty, skill, authenticity, and a purpose that’s much bigger than me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
When I look back, a lot of what people might call “luck” showed up during moments I didn’t plan for. I never expected to be in school for five years, I was meant to be there for three. At the time it felt like a setback, but staying longer actually shifted my whole path. I met people who ended up supporting my work, and I learned things about myself that I wouldn’t have discovered if everything went according to my original timeline.

Another unexpected surprise was how invested people became in my personality online. I wasn’t trying to “be” anything; I was just showing up as myself. But people connected to that more than I realised. That connection boosted my engagement and brought in more clients, which became a blessing I didn’t plan for. It felt like life quietly nudging me forward.

I’ve also had moments that looked like “bad luck” at first like my old landlord not keeping the place up to standard. There were times when the electricity wouldn’t even work. It was frustrating, but it pushed me to rethink where I wanted to be and the kind of environment I needed for my clients. If that situation didn’t go wrong, I might’ve stayed somewhere that didn’t match the level I was growing into.

And then there’s the part that feels like pure faith aligning with timing. I waited for the right studio instead of rushing into the first available place. That wait led me to share a studio with two amazing girls, which has brought nothing but positivity and growth. That moment felt half luck, half God placing me exactly where I needed to be.

So in my journey, luck shows up as situations I didn’t expect, both good and challenging, but each one pushed me toward something better. And for me, those moments always feel guided like faith and timing working together.
