Meet Kevin Johnson of Kevin J Entertainment in West End

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Johnson.

Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Warsaw, North Carolina. To Demoris and Kevin Johnson Sr. I am the middle sibling of seven to a total of three girls and four boys. I attended Dublin county schools K-12. Always involved in music and arts in school. As a child, I was known as the church kid or “the barefoot prophet”. So church was my life and my life was church. I grew up around actors and comedians, world-traveling musicians, artists, and producers. My father and mother were the first comedians I’ve seen. Not to mention, their humor was dark. Growing up, my dad always watched “def comedy jam” so I’d like to think that played a more part in my life because I can always to this day remember the jokes and comedians I watched as a child. I was also known as one of the class clowns, so that played another m ajar part. I was in every production and performance. Any talent show or contest, I was always involved. I wrote plays and skits in my preteens for my church, as well served as the choir director and musician.

So doing comedy is literally a portrayal of everything I’ve encountered in life. My first stand up comedy set came from singing. Crazy right? I was singing and telling jokes In Rehearsal, and my friend said I’m going to put you on my concert. December 22, 2014 was the first time I performed standup comedy. For the last five years, I’ve been doing comedy. It’s been an amazing experience traveling and looking back on how all of those frustrating moments for being gifted all would make sense. I was being prepared for this the whole time. Traveling every weekend has been amazing and I can’t wait until it turns into my full lifestyle. Even being on Tour, “Churchy for no reason”. Currently a part of the indieblu and eone music group family. Cohost to the newly established, Gospeloke (gospel karaoke). I’m looking forward to this being A lifestyle where I can help people thru laughter and service. I believe I am called to serve people in whatever capacity. I intend on opening my own school one day, so I can train people on how to prepare their current self for their future self.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has been a rocky road. I’ve overcome some addictions or abusing habits and not that I’ve mastered remaining the overcomer, I’ve learned a lot along the way that humbles me to keep striving to overcome. Alcohol abuse being one. In 2015, I was the director of a college gospel choir, I got into the whole party scene thinking I was fitting in. I would drink with choir members and hang out. I got so comfortable I started coming to rehearsals under the influence which eventually would get me kicked out of the choir as the director. After that I begin to sabotage my life even more with alcohol and a little before the choir. All thru the year of 2016, I dealt with this. But in 2017, I made the decision to overcome and not allow that addiction to sabotage what I was working towards. I was completely distracted.

Please tell us about Kevin J Entertainment.
Kevin J Entertainment is a brand in the making. I do all things Entertainment such as: stand-up comedy, influencer marketing, internet comedy, etc. I hope to expand that to so much more where I am a major service to people. I’m most proud that I came from nothing and no plan to a growing brand. I’ve been blessed to travel to Nevada, Texas, Virginia, New York, Philadelphia, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida. And several other places to come.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I started over, I would redo high school, take it more serious. Make better decisions that would help more than hurt me. I’d take myself more seriously and maximize on each moment. I’d take more risk and NOT CARE WHAT ANYBODY SAYS.
