Meet Khyln of Khy’s Growth Refinement in Atlanta Georgia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khyln.

Khyln’s hair journey all started due to not being able to find the perfect product that benefited her particular hair. Khyln was born with an uncommon hereditary gene that consists of three different hair textures which led to purchasing so many different products to meet the needs of all three different hair textures. Khyln’s hair would dry out and become so brittle that we were literally going through two bottles of moisturizer a week. We noticed that literally, all of the store purchased products had some form of alcohol in them. Alcohol dries your hair out no matter how much of the product you use to preserve moisture its a never-ending cycle with dryness which eventually leads to brittle hair that ultimately breaks off from a lack of moisture.

Once Khyln’s hair started having weekly treatments with raw homemade products her hair retained moisture, held a pretty shine and begin to have a healthier look. Her healthy nourished hair led to increased growth. Khyln has received so many inquiries on how to accomplish healthy lengthy hair as an African American child. For the last few years, I Khyln’s mom would give bottles of homemade products to friends and family. As Khyln got older, she has inquired more about being an entrepreneur from watching how business is accomplished, obtained and facilitated. Khyln was not your average six year old with a dual enrollment in school and private homeschool for 1st grade before committing to full time online private homeschool. She was on a 3rd grade reading level and 4th grade mathematics level and even in kindergarten at her private school she was on a 2nd grade reading level and 3rd grade mathematics level.

During this time in kindergarten is what led to the changing of learning environments and what best suited her excelled learning style. Khyln was excelling academically at an exceptional level and began to inquire about being homeschooled because she no longer was in class with her friends due to switching classes throughout the day for subjects that she was more advanced in. She noticed that she was with older students and wanted to be home rather than switching classes throughout the day. We decided to allow her to do dual enrollment and began paying a new tuition to private online homeschooling to see how well she performed. Khyln exceeded our expectations which encouraged full-time homeschool enrollment. Our conversations at the dinner table has always been about education, business, ownership, and how to be self-sufficient outside of a 9-5. Khyln has now been homeschooled for 2 & 1/2 years giving her much opportunity to learn the ins and outs of business and the foundation of entrepreneurship. Khyln would take the time to learn profits & loss, residual income, and revenue vs net income. Khyln quickly learned a simple formula that stuck with her. Revenue is money you make and profit is money you keep! Once she understood the basics of running a business and understanding the financial literacy behind being a business owner, she was even more eager to be a business owner.

Within the last two years, Khyln has been intrigued by entrepreneurship so much by her immediate family that she wanted to have something of hers and since the hair products were her very own products being used on her hair with successful results, she wanted it to be a business of her own. The many questions & compliments on the healthiness, length and thickness of her hair encouraged her to bottle it up! Khyln began to work on the names for each hair product. Khyln named each of her products all the same name but in different languages. Each product is named GROWTH. With the unexpected covid pandemic Khyln’s parents couldn’t do the normal expected over the top birthday surprises that required flights and travel so we thought outside of the box and allowed this year to be the year that we gifted her with a gift she has never received and that was the gift of an LLC. Khyln’s parents decided to gift her a legalized business on her 8th birthday named Khy’s Growth Refinement. Khyln was so excited that her dream came true and was proud to be a business owner at the age of eight years old.

Today Khy’s Growth Refinement is doing excellent in business and has increased from 4 hair care products to 5. Due to an overwhelming demand Khy’s Growth Refinement is only available for purchase one day of each month and that day is the 15th of every month to follow her date of birthday. That decision was made to best suit customer service because products are handmade.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, Khy’s Growth Refinement has been a smooth road. The logistics due to covid has made a few struggles when it comes to unexpected delayed deliveries and backorders of bottles. We’ve had to pay astonishing amounts to have bottles next day air, and consistently order bottles from several companies all at once in hopes that 1 of the companies are able to ship within the normal processing times along with also waiting two months after grand opening for flat rate shipping supplies.

Which led us to take on the cost of the shipping expense for the majority of the grand opening orders by doing free shipping and $5 shipping rates. We eventually moved to the usps standard flat rate shipping. Building the website was also a challenge but it was a challenge that I was willing to accept because I knew it would be beneficial for business and make business process a lot easier. It wasn’t my first time building a website but it was my first time building a store website which is totally different and requires a lot more detailed information.
