Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Raye.
Kiara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my Health & Wellness business almost two years ago but within the past year, I’ve transitioned to my current coaching business model and changed my brand name to Curves N Cupcakes, where I now specialize in teaching Plus Size Women how to create healthier lifestyles without focusing so much on their physical appearance and instead of putting the focus on creating healthy, daily habits that can be sustained long-term.
I chose the name Curves N Cupcakes because I’m a proud, plus size woman with a passion for Health, Wellness and lifestyle improvement and I’m an avid believer in Health At Every Size. Meaning, there is no one size fits all approach to healthy living and that health looks different on everyone and everybody.
And the cupcakes part comes from the Anti-Diet approach I take to Healthy Living. Like many of the people I encounter on a daily basis, I used to be trapped in the constant cycle of yo-yo dieting, where I’d hop from one fad diet to the next, always seemingly looking for the “magic fix” to all my life’s problems, when in reality, all I was doing was setting unrealistic and unsustainable expectations for myself, which pretty much led me nowhere.
After discovering what I call Food Freedom, which in short is an anti-diet approach to eating, that has no restrictive rules, unlike these popular diets out there, and it has basically allowed me and the people I work with complete freedom into our lives. Food Freedom takes the stress out of worrying about what, when and how to eat throughout the day which also frees up a lot of time. And ultimately restores peace of mind in knowing that there are no rules. It brings back confidence to know that you can trust yourself to make the best decisions for your health. And It brings back to power and control in knowing that you don’t have to follow someone else’s plans for your life and your goals.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has been nothing short of a crazy, roller coaster ride. Many ups and downs. From starting my journey over five years ago from a place of low self-confidence, low self-worth, actually hating myself and how I looked, and being so desperate to want to change that I was ready and willing to do any and everything to restore happiness or some sort of acceptance in my life. You name it. I’ve tried it.
From diets, supplements, all the gimmicks and fad trends you can think of, I was always on board for a “magical quick fix.” And the quick “wins” I would get from them, such as losing 30lbs in 30 days was great, and most of the time I would do exactly what was promised. But, what didn’t happen was me being able to sustain those results over a long period of time because with any quick fix or anything that sounds too good to be true, it usually is and it’s not necessarily because the products, supplements, meal plans, or programs didn’t work. But that they put most of their focus on surface-level issues (such as wanting to lose weight, wanting to get snatched, wanting a small waist and big butt and anything else focused on vanity metrics). None of these “quick fixes” ever really helped me figure out what my real problems and struggles were and never really taught me how to change my daily habits and actions to maintain the progress or transformation made within them long-term.
For example: You have someone selling a 30-day meal plan that they have personally used and helped them lose 30 lbs in 30 days. Most people will buy into that with the quickness. And if they follow the plan, they may see the results promised (but that’s always 50/50) because we’re all different, with different goals. Now let’s say you get the meal plan. What if you don’t like the food? What if you’re allergic to some of them? What if we’re in a crisis or pandemic like we are currently, and some of those foods are out of stock? Then what? And even if you are able to follow the meal plan… what happens after the 30 days are over?
The meal plan doesn’t tell you how to eat for the rest of your life, and truth be told, you shouldn’t be relying on someone else to tell you how to live your life. Now, this is not to bash meal plans, because, from my own experience, meal plans serve a great purpose, to be used as a guide, a tool, or a resource to give you an idea on how a certain way of eating can look, but if you’re someone who does feel like they do best with meal plans, I would highly recommend figuring out how to tailor the meal plan to fit your needs, your taste buds, your desires and ultimately your goals!
