Today we’d like to introduce you to Kijana Davis
Hi Kijana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like many, my career path took an unexpected turn. Initially, I had little experience in finance, coming from a completely different industry. In July of 2013, I co-founded a landscaping and construction company with my husband. Just a year later, in September of 2014, we welcomed our first & only child. That moment reshaped our lives and priorities significantly. As time passed, we realized that much of our income was being reinvested into the business or directed toward household expenses, and we recognized the need for additional financial stability.
At first, I considered real estate, thinking it would complement our existing business, but I faced challenges passing the state exam. It was during this time that a family member introduced us to the financial industry. What started as a conversation about generating more capital for our business soon turned into a life-changing opportunity. Not only did we establish a personal legacy plan by setting up our life insurance and investments, but I also decided to become an agent.
This career shift was transformative. Over time, I have deepened my understanding of finance, learned to manage money more effectively, and saved more than ever before. Most importantly, I’ve had the privilege of supporting clients during critical moments, such as helping families through the loss of a loved one. What began as a part-time venture evolved into a full-time passion, and I am proud to now serve as a Regional Vice President, leading my own financial brokerage. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is mentoring new agents and helping them achieve their financial goals.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has been far from smooth. Since entering the financial industry, I’ve faced numerous challenges—everything from the loss of loved ones to my own personal health struggles, as well as relocation and more. There were moments when I felt I had hit rock bottom, yet those same moments strengthened my faith. It takes true courage to wake up every day and bet on yourself. I’m deeply grateful that God has continued to guide me through my toughest times, both professionally and personally.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My brokerage specializes in financial services, with a primary focus on life insurance and investments, while offering a range of other services as well. We are known for creating strategic, customized plans that help our clients build and sustain a strong financial future. We don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach because each client’s needs and goals are unique. Our process involves taking the time to understand where they are and where they want to go, then working together to map out a realistic plan to achieve those goals. I often refer to it as a financial GPS. Just as you wouldn’t drive without checking your GPS, you shouldn’t navigate your financial life blindly. Once we establish a plan, my team and I stay in touch with our clients, ensuring they remain on track. I pride myself on building personal relationships with my clients—I’m not a “1-800 number” type of agent.
In addition to serving my clients, I also recruit, train, and develop agents nationwide to earn their financial licenses. This aspect of my work brings me the most joy. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how this opportunity can transform people’s lives. Many of my agents work part-time while maintaining full-time jobs, which suits a lot of individuals seeking multiple streams of income—a key goal for many in 2024. I love being able to offer that possibility. Often, my clients become agents or vice versa, further enriching the relationships we build.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I must give credit to my husband and business partner, Kelvin, for being open-minded and supportive of new opportunities. He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself at the time, and without him, I might never have made the career shift. I know it’s been tough for him, as I was his biggest help in our landscaping business, but he gave me the space to grow and has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, never letting me give up on my goals.
I also want to acknowledge our mothers, Patrina and Mignon, for playing significant roles in our entrepreneurial journey. Their support has been invaluable.
A heartfelt thank you goes to my mentors in the business, Nardin and Aisha. They’ve guided me through this process and continue to push me to be the best version of myself.
Lastly, I want to give a special shoutout to my biggest supporter, motivator, cheerleader, and everything in between—my beautiful, intelligent, and incredibly sweet daughter. All I can say is IYKYK —she is EVERYTHING, not just to me but to so many others!
