Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Elle.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
So, when I first attended school, after I finally went through three schools and finally knew what I wanted to do. I started studying fashion and I knew I was good at it, just didn’t understand certain techniques which is fine. When I first sewed a jacket, I cried, it wasn’t perfect and I can tend to be a perfectionist. I ended up failing that class and taking it again because I didn’t take my time. When you don’t take your time and let things flow how they’re supposed to, you’re going to keep messing up. After my first year, I started to get better, I cried until graduation. 😭 I’m a cry baby but that shit got done. All my teacher’s friends and family really helped me through the tough times of not having fabric, when my car got broken into and they stole all my sewing materials as well as my client’s customer dress. My brand is more than just my name, my brand tells a story for each person and where they come from. Every story is different, unique and sometimes broken. As long as you know where you come from, rep that. They’re always going to see it in how you walk talk and move. My brand represents tall and plus size men and women. I want everyone to be themselves be comfortable, shit just be you.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing has ever been a smooth road for me since I was born and I can say most of that is factual because you make decisions based off of choices, opinions and actions. With that being said, there were a lot of struggles that I face because I didn’t take my time and I didn’t wanna listen to anybody. It’s perfectly natural to not want to listen to what other people have to say on your brand, but it’s sensual because it helps you grow and it helps you see certain areas where you lack. To be quite frank and honest, I’m very proud of my work. I’m also proud of not giving up because when you give up, you’re giving up on your clients, yourself and you basically telling God that you have no purpose when you have a purpose to be the best for you.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Kim Elle is actually my first and last name Kimberly Lewis. My mom actually came up with my brand name, she just told me I should just use my name. Spelled differently which is really smart, I would’ve probably never thought about that. At the time, my brand was called ReFreshed but I could never figure out what I wanted it to be or who I want it to be for. I specialize in designing custom clothes for a tall and plus size. It’s too many brands out here that cater to average height people and I’ve seen plenty of tall people, especially in Atlanta. I’m literally the shortest in my family other than my mama and we need something for us. I’m most proud of my company the fact that I created it and something of my own nobody else owns the rights to but myself nobody else puts in as much hard work as myself and is going to reach the heights that I need my brand. My brand isn’t just about me, it’s about all of us.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I probably would’ve saved more money than I think I needed. Just to be safe, I would’ve invested into another business to help tie into my business but it’s never too late to do that now.
