Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Janke.
The short version is that they met in 2009 when Kim became Marquetta’s Zumba student in a beautiful little studio on Seminole St. in Virginia Highlands. They were in two different places in life. Kim raising teenagers, married with an established Atlanta life and Glassblowing Business, Janke Glass Studio. Marquetta was new to the city and was focused on building her career as a Zumba Fitness and other fitness format Instructor. While creating her company MD Wellness. She is a degreed fitness professional, gifted Singer, Actor and Drummer with a full life in those arenas. Meanwhile, Kim does none of those things but she was interested in learning about them and at the same time Marquetta was witnessing the all-consuming responsibility of raising teenagers and learning about that. They could easily have had nothing in common but instead were instantly connected in a Kindred Spirit sort of way, something that mystifies and amuses them all at once. Something they are both grateful for.
As time passed the relationships fostered in Marquetta’s Zumba class were amazing. Students had grown into a family and many remain so. By 2011 Kim’s kids were graduating and she realized that she wanted to do something for herself after spending 20 years parenting. As she talked about “what next” with her Zumba Family, Marquetta encouraged her to become a licensed Zumba Instructor, Marquetta has encouraged many to do the same. Kim got licensed in December 2010 and began teaching at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in the Old Fourth Ward in 2012. Sometime later Marquetta successfully relocated all of her classes to Lourdes and they became partners. That is when Fit and Fine was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a fun road not always smooth. Classes would ebb and flow but a very strong crew now. We struggled with how to get the word out on us. We lacked a marketing strategy.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fit and Fine – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Together we are committed to being our best selves inside and out that’s what we call staying fit and Fine! No matter your age or fitness level we want to dance with you.
Synergy with you, each other and even other Instructors defines Fit and Fine in The Old Fourth Ward. We have a Monday-Thursday class schedule at Our Lady of Lourdes and a 12:30 Saturday Class at The Training Room ATL beginning in January 2018.
We alternate days teaching but don’t be surprised if we call on each other. You will experience rhythms from around the world and we’re accomplished at whipping up a good dance fitness party! As a bonus Marquetta is a wellness professional and offers more services at marquettadupreewellness.com.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Growing in a second location The Training Room Atlanta which is located just off of Ponce DeLeon near Paris on Ponce. We are excited about bringing Zumba to another in town location.
