Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Brown.
Kimberly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My father, Jim Brown has always been an influence in my life and definitely my inspiration. He is my goal model, my hero, and an amazing example, so I would say my journey started with him.
I started playing sports; basketball, volleyball, tee ball, and soccer in elementary school. I continued with basketball in high school. I received the MVP. But in 10th grade, I quit sports to focus on my education because I listened to someone, which sidetracked me off my athletic journey.
In November of 2018, I decided to try out for the women’s football team, the Atlanta Steam. I tried out in December and made the cut. I’ve been practicing with the team ever since and in March 2019, I received a contract and became an official player of the Legends Football League.
I trained immensely with a private D-Line coach Larry Owens twice a week. I was consistently in the gym 5 days a week. I trained with a pass rush specialist, Dez Walker. These two men got me to where I am today.
I came from the very bottom not knowing anything about football. I put in the hard work and dedication to get to where I am today.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road but it’s been a great journey. I’ve struggled financially, I’ve slept in an airport for 10 hours to get to a game, I’ve sacrificed time with my 9-year-old daughter, I gave up the corporate life and comfortability to focus 100 percent of my time and effort to put into football.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I play semi-professional football for the Legends Football League. I’m the Defensive End for the Atlanta Steam. I’m most proud of gaining knowledge of a sport I’ve never understood or played. Making the team and playing in our first game. I’m proud of the hard work and sacrifices I made for my dream to come true, which is following in my father’s footsteps.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I don’t think I’ve accomplished my proudest moment, thus far. I have so much more to go and to accomplish to be my proudest moment but if I had to choose right now I would say making the team.
