Meet Kiyonna Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiyonna Johnson.

Hi Kiyonna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came up with the idea back in 2017 while providing mixology services for a temp agency who slacked severely in customer service which is one of my biggest pet peeves. I knew that there wasn’t much I could really say or do being that I had no managerial or ownership positions within the company… the position was literally temporary. The idea of working for myself has always been a huge dream of mine so I was ok with the situation being temporary, but I thought to myself how could I turn a temporary negative into a permanent positive, work for myself and make some money! The creation of What’s the Spill Bartending on Wheels LLC was shortly brought to life. It is always so rewarding seeing the things you work hard for come to life, but when you know you started from nowhere and everything you invested and accomplished in your business is coming right back to you, it hits a little different. Becoming an entrepreneur can be a very intimidating, but I have been able to make some genuine connections and networking opportunities throughout my experience. My business has truly blossomed over the pandemic, and I am grateful. From the smiles I get to put on people faces when they taste our one of kind cocktails mixes to the recommendations and references, I am beyond blessed and thank God. Being a black business owner right now is very crucial and important for our generation! It is so important in our community to support all local black-owned businesses and I definitely appreciate you all supporting mine!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I like to think of myself as an optimistic realist if that makes sense, and nothing about life is a smooth road. Roads are constantly being reconstructed and I think it’s really all about finding the less bumpy roads and pacing ours selfs along the way… One major thing I think I struggled with most is overthinking and fearing that my work is was not good enough which was something that obviously was not true and was really just a situation of making excuses. Constantly networking, outsourcing and educating myself helped me get over that obstacle. Another struggle that I feel entrepreneurs tiptoe around is finances just aspects of calculating starting cost, creating a line of biz credit, not low balling yourself in the prices of your product, etc.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I graduated from GA State College and have a degree in business administration, so I assist my mother with her home health care business. I also graduated from Aveda Institute as a licensed cosmetologist. A simple way to sum up what I specialize in is to say finding how to always keep my hand in the money pot. I’m known in my tribe for traveling, it’s always the question of “Where are you going to next?”. Traveling has become a non-negotiable in my lifestyle, its always has been since I could remember and definitely a quality of life I will be instilling in my children. What sets me apart from others is my ability to almost always be able to transfer positive, loving, and light energy to every being I come across whether it’s intentional or not.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Traveling and hanging out with my Uncle, I was always gone for the summers as a kid. My mom always made sure my summer plans were set. I would at least get to travel to about 2-3 states during the summers if we planned them right.
