Meet Kris Jones of The Preachin’ Coach in Decatur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Jones.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kris. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey began as a recreational coach apart of my church (Kelley Chapel UMC) community basketball league. I’ve always enjoyed the game of basketball but coaching offered a new perspective for me. It gave me an opportunity to mentor, train, develop, teach, and counsel–all of these aspects I enjoyed. I was passionate about pushing others to reach their fullest potential and I knew that was done best through Christ.

I continued to develop my craft as a coach and trainer by reaching out to and observing other coaches, watching film, and learning the best methods/practices for developing players and building strong teams.

God connected me and a particular athlete to Coach Tara Young, who at the time was an official and beginning the 6th-grade team with Adidas Grassroots program Game Elite. It was partnering with her that I really began to blossom as a trainer and coach. I would discover my value as a coach and was given consistent support/critique.

I branded myself as The Preachin Coach in the effort to capture two elements (faith and basketball) that were extremely important to my life. I believed these two things deserved to be held in unison and were the things that made me come ALIVE!!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have struggled with qualification. In a growing basketball landscape here in Atlanta, I lacked legitimacy. I didn’t have the background of a high-level basketball athlete but as a coach/trainer that is the arena that I am in. I played recreationally growing up but my strength for the game was my mind. I’m a “film room coach”. I proved myself by my most willing to STUDY my craft. I am still working to improve my influence and reach. However, that also comes with time. I will have to continue to pay my dues, develop my voice, and earn my impact on the culture of Ga Basketball.

Personally, I’ve struggled with confidence. Due to a lack of experience playing in the court. I often didn’t believe I possessed the tools to be successful in the business of basketball. My doubt has left me ineffective and hesitant. I began to work hard trusting what I did best and making sure I was dedicated, hardworking, and consistent.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a mentor, basketball coach and skill development trainer. I specialize in supporting high school teams and individual players become complete programs/persons. I minister to athletes through social media and in-person with the expectation to increase their faith and build their resilency. My attention to detail, high standards, and faith-driven focus sets me apart.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success occurs when preparation encounters opportunity. I believe that God has control over the opportunity and where it comes from but it is my job to be prepared!! It is my focus to control what I can control and allow God to handle the rest. In being successful it is important for me to manage my time, be great at the little things, and believe that what I produce is greatness, therefore, it demands all the energy/patience I can offer.
