Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Kaylin.
Kris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Kris Kaylin; I’m a 26 -year-old Charleston, SC native. I’m a radio personality for Z93 Jamz, Charleston’s Home for Hip Hop, and R&B. A 2012 graduate of Charleston County School of the Arts and 2016 honors graduate of South Carolina State University, receiving my Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications. I got started my sophomore year of college with a web series I created called Bulldog Bite; my cast members talked about an array of topics including road trips, homecoming, and financial aid. Post-graduation, I created The Charleston Summer Series, The Charleston Summer Series turned into Next Up Charleston and the main focus of that series was local musicians. In Charleston, our main source of media didn’t cover Black rappers or singers, so I decided to give them a platform. I got an opportunity to be an on-air personality at Z93 Jamz and I became “Kris Kaylin the Weekend Diva”!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth, but it’s definitely been rewarding. It’s frustrating when people know your value but they don’t want to pay you your worth. As Beyoncé would say, “you cannot be polite in business.”

Kris Kaylin is a brand. It started off being a hub for fans to get to know their favorite local artist in depth. Giving local artists the opportunity to gain more exposure. I’m still doing those things but the brand has grown to the “Welcome to Charleston Playlist,” “Chucktown Hit Factory,” on Z93 Jamz. Interviewing celebrities such as Kanye West, Brandy, Kehlani, and Megan Thee Stallion. That exposure has now propelled my personal brand and new opportunities are presenting themselves.
