Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris & Michelle Dunbar.
Hi Kris & Michelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It has always been Kris’ dream to own his own bicycle shop. Back in 2008 Kris and I met through our children, and we became good friends. My background was business, and so when he told me about wanting his shop, I told him that I could help him with the business paperwork like business license and incorporating his business. In 2009, we officially become Aztec Cycles and in 2010, we opened our first retail space in Lithonia. Towards the end of 2010, we ended up moving into Stone Mountain (DeKalb County closed the area down for necessary sewer upgrades), into a small space in Stone Mountain, Before the end of 2011, we moved to our current location at 901 Main Street. After 14 years as a tenant, we are now blessed to be the owners of the building as of last year.
Ever since we first opened our doors, in 2010, we have been blessed to say that we have been chasing our business’ growth and not the other way around; we continue to grow to meet the cycling communities needs.
Our focus is service, that’s where we feel most needed. Helping customers find the right bicycle for their needs. We sell, service, repair, rent, restore, modify all bicycles of all makes and models. We also service, repair and rent E-Bikes, and have been doing so for the last 10 years.
We started a group ride that rides to the King Center from our shop in Stone Mountain to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King which has now been indoctrinated as ‘The King Day Ride’
We also celebrate every year with the cycling community and all our patrons our annual anniversary which occurs every November.
In 2018 we opened up our 2nd brick and mortar location in the Historic West End Atlanta. We are proud to be the only Bicycle shop in that area and being able to serve our community.
Our 3rd project is still underway but will be open soon. We are renting bicycles and E-Bikes from a shipping container at the container courtyard at Pittsburgh Yards which is on the Westside beltline.
Our future endeavors is to grow as the city grows, providing alternative healthy transportation for everyone!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the road has not always been smooth, bumps along the way are natural and just a part of growing. Our main struggle is capital. Capital to keep our employees paid and capital to continue our growth.
Mostly finances has been our biggest struggle.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in service, we realize that there are so many options for folks to get on bikes, that we focus on keeping their bicycles running. We are known for our exceptional service. We are fortunate that our reputation has stretched far and wide, to the point where we have had customers travel to see us from other states. They come for our recommendations, from purchasing to repair, to upgrades and modifications.
Our personal customer service and our passion is what sets us apart from others.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Honesty, integrity and our passion for all things cycling is the characteristic and what we feel is important to our success.
