Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Dauphin.
Krista, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My creative business started after a prolonged health issue. I struggled for a long time with issues with my immune system and a form of physical hypersensitivity. I was trained as an Alchemical and Clinical Hypnotherapist but I could no longer see clients. I began a multi-year healing journey studying and experiencing many forms of alternative healing including Chinese medicine, Qi gong, Soul Mind Body healing, and Kriya Yoga and during that time my creativity began to blossom. It was a way for me to focus my mind on something joyful and positive and reconnected to my inner child. I was very creative as a child and thought that I would major in Art in college but my life took a different turn and I left college early. Healing arts and creative arts are very intertwined for me. I have needed to dive deep into both of these areas to help create a balanced state for my life.
Selling the things I made to others happened pretty naturally about five years ago. I had made a series of dream catchers and I had several hanging in my home. My son’s girlfriend was dog sitting for us and brought a couple of friends over with her to let the dogs out. They wanted to buy the dream catchers. Their friends would then see them in their rooms and it really spread by word of mouth and their personal social media posts. I started to design jewelry basically for myself and as I made things I would post it on Facebook and Instagram for fun and people really liked it and asked to buy it. It’s very organic and homey and friendly and relaxed. It’s something that brings me joy and allows me to make a special connection with others and bring them a little bit of joy and beauty in my own way. I do lot’s of custom things for people so it makes it really special to be part of someone’s Anniversary or Birthday or Graduation. People can spend their money anywhere so it’s a gift when they choose me to create something special. My greatest compliment is getting feedback that someone cried after receiving something I made it’s so heart touching and rewarding.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a road of self-discovery for me. Trusting my own muse and my own taste and breaking through negative mindsets and beliefs about my own abilities. There is always that voice that says nobody will like what I make or want to buy it. It is also a challenge to put yourself out there, we all fear rejection on some level and artist are risking the rejection of their heart and soul. You just have to love yourself enough to continue to do it and trust that the universe has got your back.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Boho Mojo Jewelry Designs – what should we know?
I am making mostly custom items or one of a kind items. I collaborate with people to incorporate what their needs are. If they have seen something, I made and posted that is out of their budget I try to work with them to recreate it in a more affordable way. Sometimes people send me a picture of something they have seen and I make a version of it or they have a theme for a fundraiser or party or even a business logo and I create things around that. Sometimes people have sentimental pieces of jewelry they love that they aren’t wearing so I redesign it for them and it has a new life. I like creating a feeling for someone that what they wear is very much reflective of their personality and uniqueness. I do think what we wear is a reflection of our inner being and expressing that is important and joyful and helps bring out feelings of confidence in us. It matters and it’s fun to play dress up!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Freedom of self-expression for myself and my customers.
