Meet Kynesia Bishop of A Seat Creator

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kynesia Bishop.

Kynesia Bishop

Hi Kynesia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I tell people that I have had many career lives. I follow my passion. I have always loved working with people. My career started in mental health. I worked at a residential hospital for children and adolescents.

While I worked in mental health, I began my master’s degree in education. After graduating with my master’s degree, I started working as a second-grade teacher. I loved teaching. My grandmother was an educator. I loved going with her to work and watching her interact and work with her students.

I wanted to do more in my career and transitioned into learning and development. Working in learning and development taught me more about understanding what inspires adults professionally. I started my doctorate while working in learning and development. Currently, I work in sales as an account manager.

I started seeing fewer women in leadership positions as I transitioned from the education and social service fields. I would wonder why I do see black women in management positions. I started to be able to answer my question when I started to experience the bias and microaggressions as being either the only black woman or the only person of color in my professional setting.

I did not want to be just another story to talk about. I wanted to make a difference. After a year of contemplation, I launched A Seat Creator LLC, a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging and Organizational Change Management consulting agency. I want to empower and inspire black women to continue to advance in their careers despite the obstacles and biases they may face.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Developing A Seat Creator, LLC, a consulting agency focused on empowering and inspiring black women, was difficult. I knew I wanted to make a difference and was afraid of the reception I would receive. I was wrong. I have had many people reach out to me to partner or need my services.

People have told me that this type of consulting agency is necessary.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about A Seat Creator, LLC?
A Seat Creator LLC is a DEIB consulting agency that focuses on empowering and providing the tools for women of color, specifically black women who want to transition into leadership positions.

A Seat Creator LLC helps organizations incorporate DEIB as a practice at all organizational levels. Companies need to understand the impact of DEIB and how, if implemented correctly, that impact positively transcends organizational challenges.

A Seat Creator LLC is expanding. In April 2024, the Rise and Thrive: Empowering Black Women in Corporate America podcast will launch. The podcast is dedicated to empowering black women with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to navigate and excel in the corporate world.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as training for your first race. You start an exercise regime to train for the race. You may change your diet and start eating healthier. You set small goals to prepare for the big goals. On the race day, you are prepared to maintain your time and complete the race.

Success is all the preparation that leads to accomplishing the goal. Success is ongoing and ever-changing because goals can evolve. Success is not what people define for you but what you define success to be for yourself.
