Meet LaBronze Garrett of Power Elite Performance in Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaBronze Garrett.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Marshall Texas. My mom is a survivor of an abusive relationship that almost cost her her life. Before I was born, she was shot in the head and wasn’t supposed to survive. Doctors told her mom, my grandma, that even if she survived she wouldn’t live a normal functioning life, let alone have kids. She pulled through by rehabilitation but was left partially paralyzed. She later got the courage to date and ended up getting pregnant. Doctors told her that she should have an abortion because it would be a difficult pregnancy being paralyzed.

I was supposed to have all types of birth defects, but I was born perfectly fine. They called me a “miracle baby”. My mom named me LaBronze which means desirable and precious lol.

I graduated from Tatum High School, playing football, basketball, baseball and getting a full-ride track scholarship. I then graduated from junior college and went to UGA where I won a collegiate national championship in the 400 hurdles. After graduating from college, I realized that I could probably compete on a professional level. I started my professional track career in 2003. In 2004 during my second year in the circuit, I made the indoor World Championship team which was held in Budapest, Hungary. I made my first outdoor Olympic team in 2004 and returned to the Olympic Trials in 2008 and 2012.

After traveling around the world with track, I decided to start my own business as a personal trainer in 2009. My company, Power Elite Performance, focuses on corporate wellness and athletic development. More specifically, I implement and conduct wellness programs for companies. I also train athletes of all ages getting them ready for high school sports and beyond.

The most amazing thing about what I do now is celebrity training. I’ve worked with the casts of Oprah’s shows Greenleaf and Queen Sugar as well as NBC’s Game of Silence, AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Overall, I chose to be a trainer because I wanted to show people that we all have the power to change our lives and make it better. Had my mom believed the doctors when she was told she would be a vegetable for life and never walk again, I wouldn’t even exist. That’s why I tell all of my clients never let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do. That’s your decision to make, you’re in control of your own destiny.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was bullied and teased in High School, kids used to call my mom Crip or the Crypt keeper. I’ve had people promise to help boost or push my business and put me into financial binds. People Stole business ideas from me, training workouts. Also trying to start and manage a business with kids. So it was very hard juggling that.
