Thanks for sharing your story with us Laine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Starting my own marketing agency wasn’t an accident; since I was a little girl I knew someday I was going to be the boss. In kindergarten during play time I was always in charge, I was even cast as Cruella De’Ville in the school Disney play (bless the 90s). Growing up my dad, grandfather, uncle were all small business owners, the entrepreneurial spirit is just in my bones.
I landed a full-time job as a marketing coordinator at a startup in Atlanta before I graduated from university and was instantly hooked. I couldn’t get enough of the scrappiness of startup life, all the new technology, but most of all I loved the way you could test new marketing methods and then analyze the data. It was then that I knew I was going to start my own marketing agency before I turned 30.
In October 2017 I decided I was as ready as I would ever be, and thus began The Tortoise + Hare Marketing Group. My experience with a variety of small businesses has afforded me the unique ability to partner with entrepreneurs and strategically handle their marketing while they manage the rest of their business.
There are so many different marketing channels available to small business owners now, it is overwhelming. My clients don’t have time to manage all aspects of their business and then sit down at night to try to figure out how to build a website from scratch, write a great blog, get more followers on Instagram, more engagement on Facebook, or learn everything there is to know about Google AdWords. My passion is to partner with busy small business owners and take the weight of marketing off their shoulders so they can focus on what they do best, run their own business.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not all been easy or smooth. And I wouldn’t change it for the world. When I first began, I listened too much to what others thought I should do to make the most money and how I should position myself. While their advice was good, it wasn’t for me.
I’ve run into some mistakes while I was pitching my services to a potential client. I’ve undercharged and over-committed. I’ve said that I could do things I had no idea how to do and wound up spending hours doing research. But you know what? I’ve delivered on everything, I’ve learned more in a few months than I learned in undergrad, and I’ve had a blast doing it!
All these things are just part of the journey. I wouldn’t change any of the mistakes I have made along the way, they have all been incredible learning experiences. If it was too easy, everyone would be doing it. I know The Tortoise + Hare Marketing Group is going to make a lot of small business owners very happy and increase their sales. I’m thrilled I get to work hard to continue to grow my clients’ businesses, it’s truly my pleasure to partner with each of them.

I love the diversity of Atlanta! I love the food, the art, the nightlife, the brunch life… I love it all! I especially love the entrepreneurial spirit of the city. Everywhere you look a small business owner is working toward their dream. It’s incredible!
I like the traffic least. However, Atlanta without any traffic isn’t really Atlanta.
