Meet LaKendra Fulbright of Regenerative Therapy Of Georgia in Decatur/Stonecrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKendra Fulbright.

Thanks for sharing your story with us LaKendra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always knew I wanted to do something in the medical field/health arena growing up. But it wasn’t until I met my first chiropractic mentor while participating as a student-athlete at Florida State that I even entertained the idea of being a chiropractor. I saw how he interacted with his patients. He had a great bedside manner and he was hands on.

And then he explained the science and philosophy of chiropractic to me and how it was a drug-free alternative to achieve health and well being. I felt like it would be a great fit for me. I could relate as an athlete because he explained how chiropractic could help naturally enhance performance by optimizing my body’s alignment. But then he explained how chiropractic helped with overall health, vitality, and longevity. This seemed perfect because I knew that I would eventually come back home to a predominantly black suburb and I wanted to provide this alternative health care option to the people who could benefit the most.

I’ve been in practice ten years in Dekalb County and this was the year I stepped out on my own and opened my own practice. Although I have helped thousands of people across the world, I wanted to be able to do it on my own terms. I have built a referral-based family practice and have gravitated to women and children. Having two children of my own made me see how important prenatal care is. I was also able to see how powerful of a tool chiropractic care is to babies & children. They respond so well to care! I love being able to potentially change the trajectory of someone’s life with one adjustment! On a public health tip, healthy mothers with healthy pregnancies lead to healthy deliveries which leads to healthy babies which leads to a healthier community. This was my way to directly affect public health in my community! It’s no point in us living long lives if we aren’t healthy. We need quantity AND quality and chiropractic is my tool to ensure both.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would actually say that my road to becoming a chiropractor has been a smooth road. I breezed through undergrad, finishing in 3 years, even after my academic advisor thought it would be impossible for me to even graduate in 4 years as a student athlete. I was able to complete my master’s degree while still on full scholarship at Florida State University. I completed chiropractic school on time and passed my board exams the first time through. And I found a job within months of returning home. Now that I am a chiropractor, I’ve had to combat some invisible barriers. As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I have had some people question the legitimacy of my “doctor hood”, dismissing chiropractic as not a “real doctor.” Then I’ve experienced barriers within the profession being both a WOMAN and being BLACK. However, I don’t think those barriers are unique to my profession.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Regenerative Therapy Of Georgia – what should we know?
Regenerative Therapy of Georgia was birthed while I was still employed as an associate in 2018. I was home on maternity leave and decided I wanted the freedom to serve my community through chiropractic care without sacrificing my relationship with my children. I wanted more time (at home) to be a great mother and wife. I initially was only offering Regenerative Medicine services, therapies that helped prevent or postpone the need for joint replacement surgeries in those with arthritis. The therapies also helped athletes recover more quickly from injuries. I had a great MD as my supervising doctor and a great NP who performed the procedures (both black women). Once I was no longer an associate, I incorporated the chiropractic services in my practice. Naturally, the chiropractic took off.

As a former athlete and All-American, I understand what it takes to be successful on the track/field/court. So it was natural for athletes to make up a portion of my practice. I enjoy working with this demographic. During my pregnancies, I noticed I was treating a lot of pregnant women! So it seems I attract what I am- athletes and mamas! To better serve that demographic I have recently joined the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and have become Webster Certified (a technique particular to pregnant women).

I am a black-owned, woman-owned business. I am a chiropractor. Black women make up less than 1% of the profession. I think that sets my business apart!

I am most proud that I didn’t allow fear to keep me in a place where I couldn’t fully realize my potential. Owning my own company allows me to focus on serving those who need chiropractic the most.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
It takes a village so I could never take all the credit. My parents are my biggest supporters. They let me live with them for free when I was early in my career 🙂 My husband has an entrepreneurial mindset so he was the push I needed to eventually take the leap of faith in opening my own practice. He is also a listening ear and soundboard for all my ideas. He is my unpaid consultant and advisor :). My family and friends support me in a major way! They come to my open houses, refer their friends, and tag me on social media whenever someone is searching for a Chiropractor in the area. Their trust in me is the biggest motivation (and compliment) ever.
