Meet LaKeshea Mims of Keesh’s Sweet Treats and Events in Lithia Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKeshea Mims.

LaKeshea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been a social worker for the past 18 years but my 1st love is baking/cooking. I’ve always been the party planner in my family and among my friends. I decided a little over a year ago to start a business that allows me to marry the two. Cooking for others brings me joy. My heart smiles when I watch people enjoying food I’ve prepared. Fear held me back in many ways for years. As a part of my 40th birthday celebration, I decided it’s time for me to be fearless. Step out of my comfortable zone and introduce my talents to more than my family and circle of friends. I’ve used social media and word of mouth to elevate my business. While still working a full-time job, my sweet treats business is continuing to grow. As it grows, I’ve grown as well. It’s amazing what you can accomplish once you put fear aside.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Fear has been my biggest challenge, The sweet treats business is booming right now and it seems like everyone is doing it. I’ve constantly had to remind myself they are not you and you are not them. When I started my business, I didn’t have money saved to get started. I now know that wasn’t the smartest move. I later learned it take s a little while to see lots of profit. I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes: Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Please tell us about Keesh’s Sweet Treats and Events.
I make a variety of sweet treats which include: Candy Apples, Caramel Apples, Candied Popcorn, Alcohol Infused Popcorn, a variety of flavors of banana pudding, (The most popular being a banana/strawberry pudding), Different Flavors of Chess Squares, Candy grapes, Chocolate covered Pretzel Rods, Oreos, Rice Krispie Treats, etc. I also do Event Planning and Decorating. I make Paper Flowers, create backdrops, centerpieces, etc. I do monthly pop up shops where I allow customers to pre-order treats and pick them up at the pop-up shops here in Metro Atlanta and Middle Tennessee (where I am from). I am most proud of the fact that I finally did it. I am doing something I love! When I told people I was starting this business…. most said Finally!! It’s about time!! They confirmed I was making the right decision. What sets me apart for others is this is more than a hobby or just something to do to make money. Its a passion for me. I’ve enjoyed this since I was a teenager and didn’t know how to turn it into what it has grown into today. Today it’s a small business but who knows what it will be in a few years.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started many years ago and I would have saved money before starting the business.
