Today we’d like to introduce you to Chef Larry Colbert.
Larry, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up on the west side of Chicago, watching my mom and dad cook for our family. I developed a passion for food at a young age. I didn’t pick up the art of cooking until later in life. I attended The Art Institute of Atlanta in 2017, where I graduated Magnum Cum Laude of my class. Shortly after graduating, I started Aroma, my private chef company.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting Aroma has not been easy. I’ve had to find creative ways to market myself, being a small private company with no start-up money I’ve had to sell baked goods to buy equipment for my business. This year has been hard with Covid-19 because my whole business is based on going into someone’s home and cooking and amazing elevated meal for them but I’m not able to do that because of the coronavirus. So, the business has been tough! But I’ve gotten through by providing to-go meals and baking for special events, birthdays and anniversaries to my clients.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Aroma is a private chef company where I come into your home and provide the ultimate fine dining experience. I bring everything from the table, chairs, silverware, plates and glasses for set up . I’m known for my plating of food and making the food appealing to your eyes. I specialize in elevating the flavors in food. I love cooking southern meals. The thing I’m most proud of as a company is making every client happy at the end of dinner while doing it in the comfort of their own home. What sets me apart from others is my attention to detail. I love the details of the food.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up on the west side of Chicago was truly a great experience. I am in the middle of five children. I have three brothers and one sister. My mom and dad truly sacrificed a lot for us. Our family didn’t have a lot of money but they made it feel like we were rich. I was a shy kid growing up but my way of expressing myself was through sports. In high school, I played football, basketball and baseball for Taft high school.
