Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTe’sia Gathers.
LaTe’sia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up wearing glasses. I did like wearing them. I just didn’t like how my glasses never fit my personalities. So, when I got old enough to dig in my eyes and not be scared, I started wearing contacts, they made me feel more confident. Wearing glasses was cute to me but I did not feel cool with them on. By 2015 I stopped wearing glasses in public. I was twenty fine years young; my confidence level at this time in my life was admirable. As time went on, I grew more and more confident within myself. I had a day I was shopping and ran into some eyeglasses up against this wall. Using the mirror in the middle of the department, I started smiling, walking forward, walking back and looking at myself in the mirror the whole time with these big round glasses on my face. They were big. My face was big. I loved them. I purchased them. I wore them probably everyday lol. I really liked them. These had black frames that were round and fit my face perfectly.
The more I wore these new glasses to work, the more compliments i got on them. And the people who had already seen me in these glasses before were now asking me to let them have the glasses from off of my face lol. And I will never forget Charmaine asking me after Sunday service to either pick her up her own pair or sell her mine. Now if we could press fast forward one two three four times to a year and a half later 2016 2017ish… dunt dunt dunt. I was working from 9 to 5. I hated it. Because my supervisor hated me. I was overqualified. Hate is a strong word. She hated me and I hated it. You know one of those jobs where you start keeping a notebook. Yup, I kept a notebook but my notebook was different. The first page of this notebook read “KissChocolate.” I had an idea like a serious idea that had come to me. I wanted to have my own eyewear line. I wrote down everything and anything from top to bottom whenever whatever came to my mind. I wrote everything down in this notebook called “KissChocolate.” Even if I did not have my KissChocolate notebook with me, I would make a notation of an idea I had for this KissChocolate eyewear line on my phone. It all started as an idea.
Time went by. I was still on this same job great coin but I hated being there every day. I was having one of the days. Everyone got to get off early except me and because somebody got to stay and I just had to be that least favorite somebody. As I sat in our section as the only one still there from my team, I was like on the web browsing searching for domains I was bored, so I bought one for a couple of bucks. The domain was www.kisschocolate.us.
I didn’t even know what a domain was but I knew I liked the way www.kisschocolate.us sounded. It made me think of us as a group of people or as a business. I pulled out my KissChocolate notebook and asked myself how I am going to buy a domain with no website. I starting thinking to myself I was moving to fast. I started saying to myself I was thinking too big. As I flipped open my Lil notebook, I asked myself what small or little things can I do from this big list of things to do that will get me closer to my ultimate goals. One by one, I completed small tasks from my KissChocolate notebook that has now turned into a real-life e-commerce business. It is my great honor to introduce myself as an Owner, CEO and Founder of KissChocolate LLC.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My outlook on life 99.5% of the time is it is what you make it. You make your life based on your decisions, your choices. This road has been smooth because this road was built just for me. My experience with KissChocolate has been exciting and interesting. I would compare owning a business to riding a wave. Some seasons the business is really up, sometimes the business may be a little down. However, having everyday life balance gives you an advantage in riding that CEO wave every single day. My biggest struggle was incorporating my business life into my personal life. Transitioning from worker to CEO to Mommy back to myself, then figuring out who I’d need to be next was the hardest for me. Now I use agendas, planners, calendars, etc. Planning my weeks out day by day and time has brought balance to both my personal and professional life.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the KissChocolate story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I give all thanks to THE CREATOR OF LIFE, THE MOST HIGH for all things good and bad. Also, for being a Lillie in my valley. All things work together for the good of them that love the LORD. Through experience, I have learned that you have to take the good with the bad. I am not defeated by any bad. But In every bad situation, I find that there is a lesson to be learned or knowledge to gain as much as I would like to only take the good and leave the bad. I do understand the purpose of both good and bad. Learning to find balance within yourself in bad situations and times creates room for good to come to you. Especially having a positive mind in a bad situation. Some think it’s cliche but I have seen it work. In both my personal and professional life, it works.
