Meet Laura Wilson of Flaura Botanica in Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Wilson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Laura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been “artsy”. I sketched, painted… went to a Performing Arts high school in Cobb County, even! But when I got married, the flowers were my favorite part. I never forgot them as we started our life in Macon. Life progressed, and I tried to find my niche in the world. I had two amazing kids and while I cherish them, I felt like I needed a purpose other than just mom. A creative purpose that fulfilled me and gave me a voice in the world.

When my kids got older, I started working part-time at a florist and pretty much did anything and everything. I learned how to tape wires, make bows, wrap plants and make boutonnieres. I soaked it all in, including the chaos of prom season, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. I took a few classes here in Atlanta at Halls Wholesale, who were so supportive of me and made me feel like I could really do this! Pretty soon, I outgrew the Macon florist and took on my first wedding solo. I was so stressed out! But when I got the photos back, I realized I was exactly where I needed to be.

Since then, I have moved back to Atlanta and merged into the wedding scene here, getting to know photographers, venues, planners, cake bakers, etc. I have worked alongside some of the best in the floral business and learned so much in a short time, all while performing weddings for my own couples! My work is a reflection of taking all the things I’ve learned about the business (and myself!) and making something that is unmistakably me. I’m so thankful that I get to do what I love!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Sometimes I feel like success is taking a lot longer than I had hoped. But, when you’re also a wife and a mom, I think things need to happen in the time they were meant to. As creatives, or, heck as HUMANS, we’re always comparing ourselves with other people, especially in the age of social media. It’s hard on my spirit. I’ve been learning how to not be so critical of myself and know that I’m doing enough.

Flaura Botanica – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Flaura Botanica primarily specializes in wedding and event floral design. We also do retail installations, storefronts, and corporate florals. In a nutshell, we put flowers everywhere!

I’m very proud of our growth during these last couple of years since we relocated to Atlanta. This is my 4th year in business! It’s amazing to watch the caliber of projects we have coming in, and the willingness of our clients to take creative risks! My favorite things are aerial flowers. Suspended installations, dramatic arches, romantic aisle decor, and show-stopping head tables that make my heart sing!

I tend to gravitate to an interesting textural aesthetic and that seems to resonate with my couples. I describe it as “romantic edgy”. We incorporate dried elements, foraged local elements, and construct our own unique armatures to attach flowers to depending on the space. I live to create something unexpected!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When my previous clients are still raving about the memory their flowers created. When my future clients trust me based solely upon my reputation and body of work. When I’m recognized by my peers and accepted among them. Then, of course when I’m making a good living doing what I love to do! All of that would equate success.

Meet Buckhead Series Sponsor:

Ase Omavuaye Otite: I am a Nigerian-born author who is passionate about children and driven to protect their innocence. I have an extremely creative mind and identify myself as an artist. I love to express myself through art, especially photography, words, and music. I have discovered how great and freeing it is to be myself and it helps me unlock new ideas. I am an aunt and godmother to 27 nieces and nephews and play an active role in their lives. Engaging with the children in my life helps keep my inner child at the forefront when I am writing and creating art. My goal is to take readers’ imagination on a magical adventure, allowing children to connect to their creative side. I believe with my artistic ideas, I can accomplish that. My love and passion for children and technology in my personal life was the driving force that helped me write my children’s book, Happystarville. My book, Happystarville teaches great morals to young children; allowing them to see how the consequences of their actions don’t just affect them—but also everyone around them. Happystarville is available online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Walmart.
