Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren McGrier.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lauren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I studied advertising at Michigan State University and graduated in 2014. Once I came home from college, I had an extremely hard time finding a position in my desired industry which was media and entertainment. I began assisting personnel in the industry here in Detroit and became inspired to start Twerk X Tequila; a women’s empowerment event that men can come to.
I threw the first TXT in 2018 funding it by emptying my bank account and starting off as a free event. The event did extremely well to the point it allowed me to quit my job and pursue event curation full time. Rolling into 2019, I have curated four Twerk X Tequila events in Detroit, Chicago and New Orleans. In 2020 we plan to add eight cities to our roster.
Sometimes taking a big risk pays off. Definitely inspiring to see how you self-funded yourself to get things rolling! We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. Anyone who works in the entertainment industry knows it takes many years of persistence to get to the right job and connections.
Being that I am a woman the odds are higher for me in this filed because it is dominated by men.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Outside of Twerk X Tequila I operate as Connect with Lo.
Under this umbrella, I curate events, work with artist to manage or assist and work with other creatives to handle business. People know to call me to get things done.
I handle work with integrity and order to make sure process is in place for the best outcomes.
I am most proud of my very established connections in the industry, being a women in entertainment and being one of the only women in Detroit throwing her own events that sale out every time.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the wise friend. People would always call me a grandma because I always wanted to do what was right and I gave my friends pretty good advice whenever they had an issue.
I was always into the arts. I went to a performing arts school so I had a big love for music and art.
