Today we’d like to introduce you to Leng Kar Chang.
When Sabah Kinder Art (SKA) Academy was first founded, it only had 4 students learning visual arts. Under the leadership of Leng, both the founder and the principal of SKA expanded it to become the first accredited art college among the American Chinese community. SKA now provides a range of art classes to fulfill the various educational needs of its students, which includes visual arts, jewelry design, graphic design, animation, architectural and interior design.
SKA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI).
This accreditation status recognizes SKA as a successful art education institution, while upholding their academy to high academic standards within art education. On top of this, SKA is also chapter members of National Art Honor Society (NAHS), National Junior Art Honor Society (NJAHS), Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), Senior Beta and Junior Beta Club.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Art education at SKA has not always been a smooth road. Due to technological development, more emphasis has been put on science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the curriculum, thus overshadowing the importance of art in education.
However, SKA has tried to break the mold by integrating art education into a wider spectrum, establishing partnerships and academic collaboration with not only art institutions but also science institutions. With this, SKA has attracted more students to join in as they now realize that art is inseparable from other subjects, and that learning art will help students have a more holistic, creative outlook on life.
SKA Academy of Art and Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
SKA specializes in providing high-quality art and design education that fosters collaboration and encourages student involvement in local and international activities.
SKA is known for innovative and creative programs, both inside and outside the classroom, which connect students to relevant issues and provide exposure to other artists and art processes. SKA has a well-rounded art program that is not limited to teaching students drawing skills, techniques and creativity. It is designed to instill, self-confidence and an increased awareness of the world around us. The art education provided here transcends the traditional boundaries of art, integrating art into various other subjects such as science, writing, mathematics and more.
Apart from education in the classroom, SKA also creates opportunities for students to give back to society by joining various volunteering activities. This is encouraged through the introduction of activities linked to the Presidential Volunteering Service Award (PVSA). With this, SKA hopes to educate not only artistically or academically inclined students, but ultimately also students who have leadership and compassion for society who are capable of being leaders who can change the world for the better in future or even now.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
The whole SKA family deserves credit for its success. From participating in art competitions, holding art exhibitions, going on educational field trips, joining the dragon boat competition, to volunteering for the needy and homeless, none of the programs and activities could have happened without the joint support of the staff, students and their family members. SKA students know they need to strive for excellence, while teachers and parents give them all the support they need. Besides, parents regularly volunteer alongside students, not only being a good role model to them but also giving students important moral support and motivation.
