Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Topps.
Leslie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Originally from Arkansas, I moved to Atlanta near the end of 2011. I started working with a public relations firm that was based in ATL and NY called 135th Street Agency at the time. I learned the ropes of entertainment publicity when it came to red carpet events, talent handling, press and media pitching and much more. It was very challenging for me because I only had radio experience prior to working with this particular PR Agency.
Although I actually did PR for Drake’s (the singer) dad before I even knew what PR was all about. I took him around various radio stations and made contacts with media outlets on his behalf. I did some promotional things here and there for him as well. Eventually, I decided to branch off from the PR agency that I worked for. I began to manage my own clients and worked with another PR professional to help bring in clientele, as I was so new to the industry. Shortly after, I organized The Topps PR Firm and began working with popular actors that film for Tyler Perry Studios. From there, things sort of took off as our business began to get noticed and we made a lot of important connections and built significant business relationships along the way. Although it’s been quite the journey, my genuine love for public relations keeps me motivated every day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This road has been an uphill battle. When I first started was the most difficult time because of my lack of experience. I didn’t know then what it took to be a good publicist. I had to manage and learn about my various types of clients. Some of my clients only hired me on a project by project basis and some only for a season depending on what they wanted to promote. Other clients stayed on our roster throughout the year and we were able to assist in building their brand – taking their career to a higher level than when they first hired us.

What were you like growing up?
Apparently, I was very talkative because I used to get in trouble a lot for talking too much in class. I was very social with a lot of friends, but still was reserved at the same time and didn’t mind being alone – especially as a young child. In high school, I was in the band. I played the alto saxophone. I also took a couple of business classes connected to entrepreneurship. I was very much into music, writing music, singing, and playing the piano and organ. I’ve always been a people person and that has helped me a lot in my current industry.
