Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexy and Adam She.
Lexy and Adam, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our story really boils down to who we are and how we mixed it all up: Adam (Chinese 1st generation) meets Lexy (born in Savannah from an old Southern family).
Fast track 15 years, including marriage and three kids: Lexy, after 14 years of being the only white girl in a sea of Asian (Chinese and Korean) food and culture, decided to start cooking and mix up the two worlds. Therein, She Craft Co was born.
As a couple, Adam and I have loved everything restaurants for as long as we’ve been together. Years of traveling and eating out. Always envisioning what we would do the same, differently, or better. Business-wise, we worked together in a non-profit, so food was a pastime. But the non-profit closed the last January, so we took a giant leap of faith and decided to make food our full-time occupation.
We dreamed about our ideal small restaurant: a welcoming place of homemade foods combined cultures and personal attention to the lives of the people around us. That being decided, our budget was laughable. So we did almost everything ourselves. We laid tiles, built walls, cut shelves, made counters and tables pretty much everything by hand… and eight long months later, the doors opened.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Okay. We know the giant risks and statistics of opening a restaurant. To add to that, we did it in a building that was built as an office back in 1987. They say, “Take your budget and time and double it.” Yep… we got there. Our family and friends were all in, too, helping us with the build out to see this small concept to reality.
Even so, it’s been challenging in more ways than we could have known, but we’ve been greatly encouraged by our community and the many kind reviews we have received. Once we opened, She Craft Co was flooded with customers of all ages, types, and walks of life. It’s amazing to see all the mixed and HAPA couples out there.
Even people traveling through ATL who saw the reviews have made trips just to see us. We were amazed. Honestly, I think the family atmosphere is as appealing as the food.
Plus, I think a lot of people tired or eating out want something authentic— not canned, frozen or franchised. We know this new adventure isn’t an easy path, but we have a BIG shared heart and vision of unity. How better to do that than around a table of good food?
So, as you know, we’re impressed with She Craft Co – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
She Craft Co is a small restaurant opened south of metro Atlanta in Tyrone GA. Its a fusion of our lives and family in food: Southern American + Asian. We have a fully invented menu of eats and treats with new flavors and combos. All the product of a mom/home cook and dad/home smoker, we make everything from scratch.
Basically, take your favorite American cult classic food (or treat) and fuse it together with some Asian tradition: Chicken Pot Pie Spring Rolls, Bulgogi Brie Grilled Cheese, Chili Cheese Dog Egg Rolls, Asian Queso, Matcha Chocolate Chip Cookies, Sour Cream, and Onion Stuffed Wonton Chips… the list goes on, but we are excited and have been crafting up original recipes, including cookies and sauces.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our future plans are in God’s Hands, which may sound trite, but it’s real to us. We’re thankful for our daily-growing family of customers, who are becoming friends—both with us and each other.
On the food side, we’re being called to expand the cookie business, sell our homemade sauces, and shorten the wait-time (laugh!). Our 5-year old son (who has a talent for food tasting) wants to be a head chef one day. Our 9-year old son wants to take over his dad’s job, and our two-year-old daughter, Lucy, hasn’t made up her mind.
