Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Nett.

Libby Nett

Hi Libby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a small-town kid from Northern New Hampshire that was ambitious to continue my education in the arts. I grew up a dancer and loved expressing myself through movement, music, and imagery, whether that meant on the dance floor or on a piece of paper. My love for creating stretched far past the dance studio; I loved drawing, painting, designing, photography, and so many other means of creativity. It is what brought me happiness, and I knew that I couldn’t let that go to waste.

Fast forward four years, June 2023, I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with my BFA in Motion Media Design. I was able to study something that involved all the things I loved as a dancer, movement, music, and imagery, but apply it into my artwork. A beautiful harmony between the two.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This Journey has not been an easy one. To start off, moving 1200 miles away from home at 18 years old was not something I ever imagined myself doing, but is something I am forever grateful for today. I struggled a lot with change, but I learned some good lessons from these changes, and it made me who I am today.

A big change that we all had to encounter was living life through quarantine, which for me meant moving back to New Hampshire, after being in college for only six months, to a new town where I knew only my mom. The most challenging part of 2020 was not taking online classes, although that was not fun, but it was learning to enjoy my time alone. I was very lonely in the beginning, but I was tired of being sad, so I found happiness with myself. I gained confidence that I needed to grow up; this obstacle was a blessing in disguise.

The challenge I am facing now is getting my feet into the industry as a professional, finding my place and where I belong as an artist is a humbling experience, but I have learned to not give up and keep pushing towards my goals.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a well-rounded artist. If you hand me a medium and I’ve probably tried it at least once. I specialize in Motion Graphic Design, which in itself has so many opportunities and different forms of creativity. From 2D Animation to 3D, Cell Animation to Stop Motion, and Projection to Experiential Design.

My personal focus is Cell Animation/2D animation and Projection. These are just the things I enjoy doing the most and feel that I shine the brightest. Cell Animation is a lengthy process and can be frustrating, but the final outcome gives you one of the most rewarding feelings! This year I got the opportunity to work with projections and it is probably my favorite part of what I do. Using projections gives the viewers an opportunity to interact with the work through sound, motion, and light, it creates a magical experience for everyone.

I am most proud of my growth in this field, I have confidence in my work and still know there is so much more room for improvement. I feel like what sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid to start and grow to my greatest potential. It’s a competitive field and realizing that will challenge myself to be better.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I think I had some of the biggest supporters and cheerleaders, the list could go on forever. From my fellow SCAD classmates, you know who you are, to my friends who I grew up with, to my family, everyone that surrounded me has always rooted for me and my successes. But one Professor of mine really made a big impact on myself and career, Professor John Colette. A professor I only got the chance to learn from during my last year at SCAD, but the one who really showed me where I could shine. He provided me with knowledge of opportunities and paths that I didn’t even know were possible. Inspired me to never hold back and that I had all the tools in my hands to create whatever I wanted.
