Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Tyler.
Libby, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been a teacher for 11 years and have always loved art. I started my business by painting classroom signs for teachers. After I took on my new role as an ES/MS art teacher I took a calligraphy course and fell in love with it. I learned dip pen calligraphy as well as digital calligraphy/hand lettering on the iPad Pro. I was encouraged by my friends and family to start an Etsy shop but the bulk of my business is done via word of mouth and sharing through social media (Instagram and Facebook).
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I learned that it can appear easy to start a business with a strong social media presence but there is actually a lot of work and thought behind it. Since LTyler Designs is not my full time job I’ve had to find time to pursue it after my son goes to bed or on the weekends. This can be quite a challenge when you are trying to balance a good family life, work life, and social life. I have learned to only take on projects I am passionate about and enjoy doing.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with LTyler Designs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I do dip pen calligraphy and digital calligraphy/hand lettering. Most of the work I do for clients is customized in some way. I have addressed wedding invitation envelopes, created custom digital art for t-shirts and printables, as well as created gift tags and other gift items. I also have done a range of custom hand written prints.
My favorite products are the different gift tags. This Christmas I made “Merry Christmas” tags but I also make every day tags that can dress up any gift. They’re a great way to add a personal touch to a bottle of wine for a hostess gift or really any gift!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am hoping to grow my business and do less custom work. It is hard to stay on top of all the different custom orders and I could produce more products in less time without the custom aspect. I would love to have a successful Etsy shop with staple products my clients are excited about purchasing.
