Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Grubbs.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lindsey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Listening to Destinys Child, I was getting ready for the Miss GA TEEN USA preliminary pageant. I was helping all of the contestants put on false eyelashes, and hot roll their hair before we took the stage. I still remember the taste of that God-forsaken hairspray we all used Lamaur Sprayage II. I had placed 2nd runner up, and as excited as I was, I knew the double-sided tape days were done. I had a burning passion to apply makeup and style hair for a living.
The titleholder that won that year, she made the cover of Pageantry magazine. We became good friends through the MISS USA system and actually asked me come along and do her makeup and hair for the cover with permission from the editors.
That’s what ignited the flame, and ever since then, as a young girl, I was ready to go up against the stiffest competition in my field. I was shaking hands with every person I came in contact with.
My dad, being a nationally recognized high school baseball coach, instilled in me at a young age a solid work ethic. He once told me, “It isn’t about the grades you make (because Lord knows I was average Joe in that department) but the hands you shake! If I wanted anything, I would have to go out and work for it!
I started hustling after cosmetology school with every continuing education coarse I could take. I kept tunnel vision, and I knew I was born to stand out.
Being licensed over ten years, I’ve tackled over 300 weddings in my career, averaging 2-3 a month, while seeing over 130 chemical clients a month.
I’ve made over 10 National editorial recognition, film hair and makeup on Ft Benning for NBC, many state and local magazine covers, and my work has been reposted to many popular hair platform pages.
Each year I’ve been licensed in GA, I’ve received Readers Choice Stylist for ten years running, and now can celebrate my intimate Balayage & Bridal salon for the best salon!
The key to owning a business is engaging people in real, meaningful ways such that you’ll be remembered long after their hair appointment.
Showing customers you not only care about the integrity of their hair but also as a person speaks volumes.
They are invested in your business, and you need to be invested in them.
I definitely don’t fit in this industry, and I’m more than okay with that.
No one ever made a difference in any career field by being like everyone else. I have the energy of a Springer spaniel, a laugh that will blow the roof off, and a heart bigger than Texas.
If we have to be at work, l believe in making it FUN! We have the most colorful space with glitter floors! We spend our days laughing with our customers and listen to loud good music while we work!
I’ve always felt in such a trendy industry, being consistent and classic has been to my advantage. Certain styles come and go, but my color and bridal work is elegant and timeless.
I’m just here to use what talents God had given me to connect our customers to my brand and close the gaps that divide us all.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not! People say I carry it well behind my laughter, red lips and winged eyeliner, but I don’t believe you can truly reach your goals without going through hardships and being open and honest about it along the way. In today’s business landscape, being genuinely authentic and vulnerable is SO SO important. And not just because we’re in the age of social media, the world wants to know your story, your struggles, the moment you achieve a position of leadership. If you don’t tell your story, someone else will… and you might not like their version and it might not be the truth.
I believe we all have worked for someone micromanaging, and it about made me throw the towel in. Instead of giving up after experiencing massive burnout, I started to enjoy the flexibility of being a stylist. I was able to create my own work schedule which was wonderful! Later on, I had some autoimmune and health problems take a turn for the worse and had back to back surgeries trying to get pregnant with stage 4 endometriosis. I finally got pregnant after five long years with my beautiful daughter Quinley. My endometriosis got worse after delivery and was diagnosed with pregnancy induced lupus in my joints. What’s kept me physically and mentally going, has been my amazing support system.
Yes, I am 32 years old. Yes, I’m a mom. Yes, I’m a salon owner, but I am also much more than that. I am a natural leader. And I am fully capable of steering my business. I also love work, is that bad? I feel like it physically makes me feel better. In the south those words don’t roll off the tongue too easy. We need to embrace working mothers like we do working fathers. I like to run home and imagine when I flip my light switch on, I’m disconnecting from work, and connecting with my family. Less consumed with color formulas, and more consumed with Barbie’s.
Being a working mom, supportive wife, business owner, good friend, professing believer and republican in such a diverse industry has been extremely hard. The reward makes it all worth it!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Brushed by Lindsey Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
When I started Brushed by Lindsey, I had a vision. I wanted an intimate smaller salon that specialized in bridal and color only. I didn’t want to be too broad and lose engagement by offering a number of services and having a huge staff. I believe it’s hard to see someone’s craftsmanship in a sea of people, and truly build relationships with every customer. I knew I wanted to kill the balayage and bridal game and were doing just that! We’ve mastered the color game, and formal hair and makeup styling in the entire GA area! We travel all across the south to tackle Southern weddings almost every weekend. My team and myself thoroughly enjoy what we do, and we can do anything thrown our way with a smile on our face. We pride ourself on being open and honest. We have a thorough consult, and let customers know right off the bat if that is a look that’s achievable for their hair type.
What makes me the most proud is having my best friends by my side working for my company. The minute you walk in, you can feel our positive energy! I feel if my employees have the decision making authority they need, and the flexibility to work at their pace, or around school schedules, or another job, employees will be more proud to work there. Nothing makes me more proud than seeing them in their zone and doing what they love! I feel we are truly set apart because we don’t fit the mold for most stylists. My staff compliments each other very well, and I believe in individuality over conformity all day. Like Kesha sings, we are who we are!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe you learn everything through experience, and everything you go through teaches you something! There’s always luck in some things. I was lucky to be born and raised in Columbus GA, and work across the entire state. I’m very fortunate to have been born into great relationships in the community because we’ve been rooted here. It’s more of a blessing rather than luck. I’ve worked for every dime I’ve had, and I believe luck is what you have leftover when you’ve given 100 percent. Everything else seems to fall into place once you’ve worked hard.
